I was never grounded, never spanked, and never smacked. I had rules and I just followed them. If we broke the rules nothing happened but we had to face the consequences of our actions not from our parents but from the "world" if there were any. My dad made all the mistakes with drugs and stuff while my sister and I were growing up and we got to see all the ####### that he did and the consequences to his actions. I wouldn't recommend this way but we've both turned out well. We've never smoked or done drugs and neither of us enjoy drinking at all. We've just both always been more do everything by the rules type people.

I was smacked when necessary. I don't believe it ever did me any harm!

However I have to say there is a difference between a smack and a beating....beatings I would never do!!

the law needs to refined and have definitions of what is considered abuse

Peace to All creatures great and small............................................

But when we turn to the Hebrew literature, we do not find such jokes about the donkey. Rather the animal is known for its strength and its loyalty to its master (Genesis 49:14; Numbers 22:30).

Very true, but thats where its tough, what one thinks is abuse another does not.

I am a firm believer that if it makes a mark...its abuse!

I think these anti smacking nuts need to focus their attention onto the abusers and not just the parents who give the odd smack.

The world is PC gone mad.

My brother and I were smacked as kids and we turned out fine. Better than fine, in fact; we both graduated from uni, we both have stable marriages to kind, caring people, and we're responsible law-abiding adults who have never been in trouble with the law.

If you listen to the ban-smackers, we should be serial killers or rocking violently in a padded cell. I agree...it's PC gone MENTAL.

Should there be legal penalties for smacking? No. Should people take the easy discipline route and smack because it's too much like hard work to actually teach the child how to behave in any given situation? Nope.

There are many good ways to instill discipline and teach a child to be polite, ethical and have good manners. Smacking is not one of the good ways.

My dad used a leather belt on my brother and I if we were really REALLY naughty, which we weren't very often. Once he used the belt on me when I (accidentally) set fire to the fence, and the other time was when I was sitting on the hood of his brand-new car...I was old enough to know better, and he'd told me before NOT to do it...and made a dent in it, so I got the belt for that too. Otherwise I was pretty well-behaved, and that was partly because I knew if I really f*cked up, I'd get spanked with a leather belt. It works.
