Hello.

my husband is currently waiting for his green card, we’re about 4 months in. We applied for health insurance through Mn Sure, they have public and private assistance programs. He was approved for MinnesotaCare. We have asked many people but haven’t gotten a straight answer. Is Minnesota care a state benefit that is going to affect his green card eligibility? I have money to pay for regular health insurance for him, but am curious as to if MinnesotaCare is ok for him to be enrolled in before we decline the coverage.

Please only reply if you have helpful knowledge on this topic.

thank you

Is that considered your states medicaid? If it’s medicaid then it is a state/gov assisted benefit.

If you have money to put him on an a regular health insurance then do it and avoid anything that is government assistance.

This is what I found on MinnesotaCare.

It is not. Medicaid is completely free, there is a premium required for Minnesota Care. Medical assistance is Medicaid which he was not applying/approved for

I am just seeing this having spent all day navigating health insurance sites. My partner has health insurance through work but it is too costly to add me and my four children to that. Should I NOT apply for Medi Cal or Covered California? Does that count as government assistance?

Help please!

Covered California would certainly work for you if you are eligible, but it certainly won't be that much cheaper for you than being added to his insurance. You're going to pay for it either way.

Thanks. And Medi Cal??

His insurance would have been $900 /month for us!

$900 a month for all of you? That's pretty good honestly. I paid nearly that much out of pocket for just myself and my husband.

Only certain states allow immigrants to use medi-type programs, and it may be one of those things that the administration will seek to change in the future. You'd have to research if California is one of them.

However out of pocket (buying private), signing up to the state exchange (covered California), or the federal exchange are all allowable for immigrants. Open enrollment is not currently available, so you'd need to qualify under special enrollment. Wait too long and you won't qualify.

For myself and four children yes.

California does accept lawful immigrants who are not resident and yes open enrollment doesn't begin again until 15 October.

Perhaps I'll focus on getting the AOS papers in first! Now I've found a cheaper way to get an outstanding vaccination ( pharmacy) and the 693 signed off.

phew! :)
