Hi guys,

My GP wrote the following letter for me in May, my medical is due at the end of this month and I’m worried it’s not detailed enough. I have asked my GP to write a more detailed letter however it’s costing me another £30 and it takes up to 5 weeks for him to respond.

Anyone who’s had a medical already, is this letter enough?

I was literally on anti anxiety medication for 6 months or so when my mom was ill. I stopped taking them after 6 months (although, I’ve never felt more anxious than I have during this visa process) but I was never a harm to anyone and never felt suicidal.

Thoughts?

Thanks.

Hi,

It's stressful, I know. I have read in other posts that people have been requested to get letters with more detail on, but only in particular circumstances. To get a better understanding, Are you needing a letter like this because anxiety is on your medical summary? Do you have a history of self harm?

It looks like only detailed letters are required in those instances, where, you were a risk to yourself, and potentially others. The doctor will probably ask you more about it, and you'll probably find you only need to repeat what you've written here.

I definitely would not worry yourself about this at all. If it turns out that your knightsbridge need something more detailed, you'll have it around the time of your medical anyway, and this is not grounds for denying a VISA.

Hope this helps reassure you a little bit :)

Edit: @Meisha&Jake how did yours go last week?

My medical went okay but my letter wasnt enough for my history of depression. Ive just come back from seeing the practice manager & stressed i needed full information so i can send it to Knightsbridge ASAP.  They want:

. Diagnosis

. Investigations

. Treatment

. Duration of treatments and illness

. Any prior or subsequent mental health illness

. Any incidents of self harm, harm to others or suicide attempts

. Prognosis and your opinion of current mental state

I would advise anyone who gets a letter from your GP to go armed with the full history & any specialist letters, because my letter & incidents wernt enough to correspond with the GP letter

Im in sucha stressful situation & i wouldnt wish it on anyone - please make sure your GP goes into full detail even though the letter says “brief report”

Thats okay - i just want to be with my fiancé Jake just like everyone else.. im hoping i dont get denied for my past :( im terrified..

The doctor who did my medical was lovely & calm - he did mention that his manager goes over the medical & my GP letter (when they get it) & then decides whether its enough for the embassy or i may need a psychiatric test to strengthen my case... im happy to do so if need be as i know im absolutely fine in myself, my past was due to life circumstances growing up (bullied at school & low self esteem)

He checked my arms & my legs for any self harm - never done that but i have taken an impulsive paracetamol overdose before.

Aslong as i can be with Jake, thats all that matters to me. :(

My medical summary just says I was treated for anxiety and depression in October 2017 but I am no longer on the medication. Never self harmed so my doctor wrote that letter for me as he described my depression/anxiety as 'mild'.

We had our medicals 3 weeks ago. I had a depressive episode when my mother was terminally ill. My son has a diagnosis of autism. For both of us I got a GP letter. For my son I took reports from everyone I could think of. Like Meisha&Jake said, take everything you possibly can, it saves time in the long run. If you have psychiatric reports then take them. I was very stressed about my son passing this stage but it went fine. If you extensive notes (say more than 5 pages) then phone Knightsbridge so they can allocate you more time with the doctor to read through it.

The doctor was lovely. My son didn't want to take his top off for the chest exam but she joked around with him and put him at ease.

In your case Morgan, I think this letter will be enough. The doctor will see on your medical summary about any medication and the dates and if it corroborates with the letter.

Try not to stress about it, it really is not that bad.

Just ask your GP to put exact date you was diagnosed & what treatment you had/when, just to make sure you dont get asked for another letter - my history is more in-depth than yours but i would jusr ask him to elbaborate with exact dates

Alright, best course of action I imagine will be for your doctor to do a write up of what lead you to be prescribed medication etc, and that they do not feel there is an issue anymore, and you have recovered well. I wrote up my own letter and asked my GP to sign if they agreed with what I'd written. Here's an example:

"

RE: Name, Address, DOB

To whom it may concern,

My name is ________________; I am  a general practitioner of _____________________.

I am aware of Lisa’s medical history, which includes her past struggle with self injury, and issues regarding her mental health.

Lisa underwent psychiatric evaluation in April 2016, and went on to successfully complete treatment for her diagnosis of Borderline Personality Disorder.

The treatment consisted of weekly meetings with a psychotherapist carrying out Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (“DBT”).

Upon review, Lisa is doing very well, and has done so for the past 18 months; there has been no cause for concern. I believe that Lisa has fully recovered, and it is my opinion that Lisa is of no risk to herself, or others.

"

Along with this  I will take a detailed report from my therapist, and a letter from my psychiatrist. Hopefully that will cover everything on Meisha's list.

I very much doubt that will happen Meisha. It's horrible feeling that you'll get judged or penalised for having a normal reaction to a nasty situation. I felt really concerned that we'd be denied because of my son's condition and it felt unfair. That must be really stressful. Sending you a hug xx

Thank you!! I hope so! I think I'm stressed because my notes really don't say much at all and where I live, I never see the same doctor more than once so my GP doesn't really know me. I burst into tears on the phone to my doctor when they said the letter could take a month because I feel like being on medication during a difficult time in my life could ruin my wedding :(

Personally from what youve said, i dont think you will need a psychiatric test! Your history isnt as lengthy as some of us - dont panic okay? I paniced the weeks leading upto the medical & it truly isnt that bad (just my surgery letting me down atm) - i saw Dr S Husain & i shed a little tear talking about a personal incident from

an ex-boyfriend & he jumped up, grabbed me a tissue & i said “sorry for getting upset” & he said “dont be sorry, i dont expect you to be excited or happy talking about a hard past” - very lovely & calm tone - my physical was perfect, no issues atall (pending bloods & urine) but all else fine.

I am in the same boat as you, I don't believe we will be denied, but we might just suffer delays. We will get there in the end :)

I have a clean police record so i feel like thats the only good thing in my favour right now. Its just frightening to think a past can affect your happy future :(

I very much doubt that will happen Meisha. It's horrible feeling that you'll get judged or penalised for having a normal reaction to a nasty situation. I felt really concerned that we'd be denied because of my son's condition and it felt unfair. That must be really stressful. Sending you a hug xx

Thank you x

I just want to fast forward time right now.. :(
