it's not a big deal. i'm the OP and i said i was a bit surprised and a bit po'ed about the recruiter telling me no because of my hair.

but like i said a couple times - i'm over it.

i don't really want to work at disney - i'd not change my appearance for them. i already have a job - this was a season thing -something extra.

i'm a teacher and dreads work in my favor at the school where i work  . i forget that is not the case everywhere.

How do they work in your favor? You mean with the kids?

PS I know how you feel about wanting to shut down a thread, but it is VJ, and once you start a thread you can't control how much people keep talking...

I don't think you quite realize how VJ works.

This isn't over, even if you're over it.

Yea, having dreads is to my favor at my school - with the kids. Administration doesn't care - nor do the parents.

Could Disney deny employment to obese people?

Not unless your job has a height/weight requirement--basically any sort of character.

They make women's costumes for other jobs from size 0 to 24, IIRC, and if you're bigger than that, there are also generic work-anywhere costumes you can wear instead (basically a Disney polo shirt and khakis).

Disney deny dreads but im sure they hire gays lol.

... And this is relevant how? Do gay people look different from straight people?

Every company has an image they need to uphold, and they have the final say...

When I was doing my internship, I wore a tiny diamond in the left side of my my nose. The supervisors doing grande rounds with me asked me to take it out-because it outs people off-especially elderly people. I understood that-and out it came. Some may have taken it as offensive-I found it to be quite pretty. To each his own...

Sorry to say, but dreads put some people off-and it's that simple. I have had various patients come in with them, and I consider myself open minded...but it puts me off too, as I am concerned as to their cleanliness when examining them. I have yet to examine a patient with dreads that I can give a thorough head exam to, and 99% of the people I have examined with them have carried an odor. Perhaps I just had some nasty people in my exam room, and I am ready for the flaming that may come my way-but I have to say, I am one of the people it it puts off...

But as I said before, to each his own. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

I mean, I'm a bit relieved because I really shouldn't be working as a slave. What Disney expects of you sucks (hours of availability, etc), but it's the reason why I couldn't be hired.

What if I had needed/wanted the job?

You'd be sh*t out of luck unless you complied with the dress code. ;)

Welcome to the real world. I'd love to be able to smoke weed, but the random DOT piss tests (whiz quiz) I am required to take as required at my work have a way of setting my priorities in life.

So...what are your priorities? They are paying you to accomodate their standards...not the other way around.

Have to agree with this one too. If you had needed or really wanted the job you would have complied. This isn't a case of discrimination. What are you going to do at some point when you DO apply for a job that has a dress code you DON'T agree with? What if you NEED that job? Are you going to comply with their regulations? I suppose you are lucky the school system in which you work in doesn't have regs that you don't agree with, eh?

My husband had a job temporarily during December, the mad Christmas rush for UPS, and one of their regs is no beards. He didn't like it (and neither did I) but he wanted the job so he shaved his beard off. Nothing discriminatory about that.

It's called....LIFE.

In any job, you want their money, you've got to conform to their standards whether they make sense or not. That's why I love being self-employed! I get to choose my own standards! :D

There's a lot of dress codes in the clinic I work for, many I don't particuarlly like, but since my family needs to eat and I need to pay the bills, I comply. As nurses we cannot have our hair touching our neck, cannot have artifical nails, cannot wear more than 2 sets of earrings (we used to only be able to wear 1 set of studs) and cannot wear necklaces and we cannot have open toed nursing shoes. For the whole office there cannot be visable tattoos, and no facial piercings. We do have casual Fridays when none of these apply, of course we can't go over the top.
