The referendum was also held AFTER Russia took over Crimea...so we really only have their word that they "weren't involved" (which is highly unlikely).

 

    I posted at the time, since my wife and father in law had just returned to Crimea, that I don't really question the turnout or the results of the vote. 

 

   What people should remember is the Crimean parliment put forth 2 options in this referendum, to join Russia or to declare independance. There was no option to remain with Ukraine. As such the vote was not surprising. 

 

   The way the vote was skewed is that anyone who wanted to remain with Ukraine really had no option to do that and really no reason to show up and vote.

Its funny how people don't have an issue trading with China who is claiming territory that doesn't belong to them (like areas that belong to the Philippines for example). Seems like a double standard to me.
