john_and_marlene,

A couple needs to be able to have a government-recognized marriage according to the law of the place where the marriage takes place. If the marriage will take place in the USA, and it will be a recognized marriage in the USA (at least in the state where it is registered), then neither the USCIS nor the DoS have any reason to be concerned about whether the marriage will be recognized back in the Philippines.

Yodrak

.....

2. They must be legally free to marry according to the laws of both countries. Does the law in the Philippines allow for cousin marriages? If not, a petition for fiance will not be valid.

.......

Yodrak is correct. The couple individually needs to be free to marry, (legally divorced or never married) but they only need to be free to marry each other in the place they intend to marry. For instance, a Chinese woman needs her parent's permission to marry in China before age 21 but certainly is eligible to come to the USA on a K1 visa and marry here as soon as she is of legal age to marry in a US State. This is true, even if she is marrying her mother's first cousin, in some States.

There are many instances of this.

Aside and directed at no individual, let's cease on the judging others. We're here to help with the visa process, not preach our personal, religious or moral values to the other members.

I don't care how many scientific studies have been done to rule out the "discrepancies" of marrying a relative. In my opinion I'm 1 hair away from being my cousin's sister. Too much commom blood there. He's still easy on the eyes though.

"he fell in love with her nephew, daughter of her cousin"???

Please break it down a bit because I'm not sure that makes sense at all.

I don't think she would be her nephew, if anything it would be her 2nd cousin (depending if her cousin is her first cousin). Hope I make sense. I know in IL you can marry your first cousin IF you are 50 yrs or older. Tell her to check out the County website under mariage requirements.

takes on a whole new meaning to...bringing relatives to the USA

i did not understand the last part either...about if he has a better chance marrying his girlfriend in the Philippines than petitioning his niece/gf. is the gf and the niece/gf one and the same? i think if it's a valid relationship and they fill-out the part in the 129F application which ask if they are related...then technically they should be ok. the other concern would be if it is a valid relationship...or if it's an arrangement to bring relatives/families to the US faster. (totally possible...)

i'm not sure about the law in the Philippines...but i know that the current President Arroyo's first son married his cousin (i'm not sure if it's his first or second cousin...most likely second.)

my husband's close guy friend...let's call him E...is in relationship with his first cousin. it's been going on for years...and they have been dating behind their family's back....as they are against it. although monetarily speaking...it would have been great for their family! (they are old-money rich.)

The son of the president, Mikey Arroyo, married his second-degree cousin....I also think that the niece and gf are the same.

Why? Because they're so old they can't reproduce? "Well, since your eggs are all dried up... I'll let ya marry your cousin".
