What do we think -- are speed/traffic cameras a racket?  Other observations?

Iowa Senate OKs ban on traffic enforcement cameras as foes predict more traffic deaths

A statewide ban on automated traffic cameras was approved Wednesday by the Iowa Senate after a heated debate in which opponents of the bill predicted it will result in more traffic deaths and serious injuries.

Senate File 2148 passed on a 32-18 vote. It would prohibit the use of electronic equipment to issue traffic violations for speeding and running red lights and would require the devices to be dismantled by July 1, 2018.

The bill was sent to the Iowa House, where its fate is uncertain. House members are considering competing bills that would either prohibit automated traffic devices or permit them with revised government regulations.

Sen. Tony Bisignano, D-Des Moines, unsuccessfully offered a series of amendments that would have allowed local governments to retain traffic enforcement cameras near schools, in road construction work zones, and in areas where it could be documented that traffic crashes would be reduced.

"I don't think the state should dictate to communities how to enforce their public safety," Bisignano said.

Sen. Brad Zaun, R-Urbandale, the bill's floor manager, said he definitely doesn't want to send a message that the public can violate traffic laws. But he complained that traffic enforcement cameras have become a "racket" by foreign-based companies that supply the equipment and for cities that want to generate more revenue from traffic citations.

Not sure how such would cause accidents nor death.  Having lived in countries where these are the norm, they work fairly well.  Don’t want a ticket?  Don’t speed or run red lights.  Integrity is doing the right thing even when no one is watching.

Interesting think about Korea... they had the cameras up in various places.  And they moved them from time to time.  But they also put signs up warning about the cameras, and moved those as well.  Even the GPS updates included traffic cam locations.

Lack of integrity is setting up a radar camera right where the speed limit changes from 45 to 35 so you can earn revenue by catching unsuspecting drivers as they slow down. Lack of integrity is ticketing drivers with running a red light because their front wheel is over the stop line.

I'm not against the idea of using camera's, but I am against the practice of using them primarily to drive revenue. Unfortunately as time goes on, the trend seems to be progressing more towards that.

That’s not a lack of integrity, but I agree with your premise.  Until I see such happening, I still see no issue with traffic cams.  “Driving revenue” may be a by product of catching people breaking the law, but I haven’t seen that as the primary reason for putting them in place.

From a personal standpoint, I have never seen a speed or red light camera stop someone from speeding or going through the red light. I can think of one big intersection I travel daily where you can just sit and watch the numerous flashes going off every minute. The accidents are constant.

In Baltimore though there is an issue of the camera being faulty and ticketing people for doing nothing wrong. In my little town they've resorted to putting a giant electronic sign from the PD that clocks your speed on the country roads out here... no camera or anything and no tickets result, so I don't know what the point of it is. They could literally just station an officer all day and probably snag hundreds of people instead.

There have been a couple of accidents here where people slammed on their breaks when a light turned yellow and got rear ended. It came out in the story that both drivers did that because they had received a ticket previously for going through the intersection when the light turned from yellow to red. Another thing that also came out in that story was that traffic lights with cameras often have the shortest time between lights turning yellow to red.

There has been some backlash here in Denver recently, and I would say again, it's not to the concept, but just that it's becoming apparent that it's being used as a revenue driver. It's not necessarily making things safer.

Or in our case, where my husband stops at a yellow getting ready to turn red and we peacefully wait at the red right for a minute (felt like an eternity) before the driver behind us never applies his breaks at all... at least until after our back end was crumpled and we were shoved into the intersection. The guy tried lying about it to the insurance, but the camera at that intersection came in real handy... On the plus side I've just been reminded that I can use the insurance claim letters for our ROC. Thanks! :D

Yellow means slow down.  All drivers within view of the light should be slowing down, camera or no.

The ticket I got was because my front wheel was over the stop line. IIRC I think it was if more than 1/2 the wheel is touching the stop line. It still says the ticket is for failing to stop at a red light. At the top, it pointed out it was a half price ticket because I didn't actually run the red light. The next line says no point's will be taken off my drivers license.

So now I stop way behind the line and watch all the other drivers who have a $70 surprise coming. I can also tell when the other driver has been ticketed because they stop way behind the line like me. All in all I'm not sure it's making anyone safer. People still run the light. Pay to play I guess. No consequence if you can afford it.

Slow down? What is this strange thing you call slow down?! Yellow means speed up in this town and bonus points if you take out the people who run out in front of the vehicle. :jest:

Until you run that red light, and the opposing traffic was trying to be the first thru the intersection, and you hit them.  Or run over and kill the pedestrian that was in the crosswalk.  Kind of hard to “afford” that.
