the women who packed were usually excruciatingly careful with their handbags, i.e. they were afraid if they dropped their bag or set it down hard, the gun would go off. Personally I think it's stupid to go everywhere cocked and locked, but that's just me.

actually, the ones that would go off if dropped just right are usually revolvers with one under the hammer. for cch, a semi-auto is recommended but it's the owner's preference for carry.

i can see carrying locked, as in a magazine inserted and one under the firing pin with safety engaged. i can't see the hammer cocked though, that's asking for trouble.

that said, half cocked is a safety feature on the model 94 winchester 30-30.....as it can go off if dropped.

I simply do not understand why people are afraid of having someone who is "legally certified" to carry a weapon around when there is always the possibility there are "uncertified" wackos out there carrying weapons around.

we just recently saw an example of someone who was a wacko and uncertified for cch, yet he was carrying concealed.......

The safety of a gun carried concealed is a non-issue. If we're going to let 16-year-olds operate automobiles, we've already waived our right to complain about the "possibility" of being injured by someone operating a mechanical device in a legal manner.

How about we take the gun away from the maniac instead?

How is that possible?

Don't let them purchase the gun in the first place.

Apples and oranges. For most people a car is necessary. A gun is not.

Edit: Messed up my quotes (again). ;)

The Second Amendment needed an editor. Badly.

The language is pretty vague and open to broad interpretation.

It's not even that. It's got a f&cking comma after militia that renders the whole thing ungrammatical.

For the majority of people a car is a necessity for everyday living. A gun is not - and frankly, outside of people who use them for work (police, prison guards etc) I'd be worried about anyone who seriously thinks otherwise.

Sports use aside - I don't see the imminent criminal threat to justify that sense of security. But even for sports use I wouldn't say its a 'necessity', as in a car is "necessary". Its 'optional', as is the activity itself.

I'd agree - but then we're back to how many people have actually been the victim in a violent crime Vs how likely they think they are to become so. I'd bet fair money that there's way more people out there generally afraid of violent crime than have actually experienced it.
