Denver’s immigration ordinance has had a chilling effect on police operations, especially when investigating immigrants who are dealing heroin, the Denver police union’s president planned to say ...

“If you know the enemy and know yourself, you need not fear the result of a hundred battles. If you know yourself but not the enemy, for every victory gained you will also suffer a defeat. If you know neither the enemy nor yourself, you will succumb in every battle.”

Rogers’ stance puts him and the police union [...] in direct conflict with the Denver Police Department administration and Mayor Michael Hancock.

His job is forfeit, and he's dog-meat.

Yes I agree, local police forces have no business enforcing federal immigration policy. What immigrant has been raped or a victim of a crime is going to come forward if they think they will likely be deported.

You to end illegal immigration, fine. It should not be that difficult.  Step one. Provide an amnesty for the millions that are already here. It doesn't make sense to deport that many people at this stage, and besides deporting them would be unfair given that many millions of Americans are guilty of employing illegal immigrants, but get off scot free. Step two. Introduce punitive punishment for anyone seeking to employ an illegal immigrant. Have a national phone hotline where anyone seeking to hire someone can call to verify their legal status.  Illegal immigration would end very quickly, because there would no reason to come to America without the correct paperwork. Of course this would end the practice of using illegal immigration as a political football, and force them to focus on much more pressing issues. So obviously none of this will ever happen.

Hmm

Presumably you also agree that the same applies with Guns, not a Federal issue. We do not want to criminalise gun owners from reporting stolen Gun's if say there is a registrar and they have not registered.

Anyway welcome on board.

I think you forgot a step.  Securing the border needs to come first.   BTW,  not all illegal immigrants come across the border or overstay a visa for a job.

Why? If less people came, then it should be easier to secure the borders.  Also building a wall will I understand have huge negative environmental effects, also, folks with land close to the border are likely to lose out, when the government decides to confiscate their land, in order to build a wall.

BTW I am not sure how someone can get here without crossing the border, be it air, land or sea.

Providing amnesty to millions of folks will open the flood gates just like it did in the 80’s.  The borders have to be secured first. I do agree with e-verify and providing for penalties for those that knowingly employ illegal immigrants, however what do we do with the illegal immigrants that mis-represent themselves with false identities to gain employment?  Do they get amnesty too?

No, the amnesty in the 80's didn't work, because the laws weren't sufficiently tightened to discourage illegal immigration. Like I said, nothing will happen because immigration is too much of a political football to ever be fixed.

Why? There are always going to be people who will find a way to get here. Take away the reason to come and the problem will fix itself.

If someone has gone to the trouble of verifying a potential employees identity, and has done their due diligence, then there should be no problem.

No, why would they?

To your first response, it seems as if you are also in favor of securing the border since the laws have not really been strengthened much since then.

To your second point, again, not everyone comes here because of employment.  People come across or overstay for nefarious reasons, or other reasons not related to employment.  This goes back to point one, strengthening the border.

If a person has a false identity through ID theft, I am not sure if the employer should be responsible for verifying this.

As to your last point, you did not qualify your amnesty for all step, so my assumption is that this includes everyone regardless of any criminal issues.

Nothing has changed, and nothing will change until a bipartisan approch is followed, otherwise we will just have the same nonsense as we have now.

Maybe they do. You just have not provided anything that might support such a claim or how a wall might prevent them from coming.

Okay, then require everyone seeking employment to have a tax file number that. In Australia, you cannot get work without a proper tax file number, and you you need to show proof that you are entitled to one. E.g. passport, visa etc.
