Hi everyone,

I have immigrated to the US from Canada on Dec 23, 2017. I have CR1 visa.

I have been researching about my situation whether or not I need to file tax for 2017. As CR1 visa holder, I believe I do. Do I simply file 1040? If so which one of 1040 form?

Any advise would be appreciated.

Sounds like you are a resident alien and you need to file US tax.

I think just 1040, or you can just use some tax software to do it.

Per the IRS, you are a resident alien for tax purposes and would file any of the 1040 forms (1040, 1040A, 1040 EZ).

You may not need to file depending on income and some other factors and can check that here. https://www.irs.gov/help/ita/do-i-need-to-file-a-tax-return

I don't know how this would affect any income that you earned prior to moving to the US as you were presumably a non resident for tax purposes prior to that.  You might need to spend some time with the IRS international tax payer guidelines to figure out exactly what needs to happen.

I just moved to the US last year and am filing as resident alien. I have declared all my worldwide income for the whole year. After all the calculations done by H&R block (free version), I did not have to pay tax for what I earned overseas, although I seem to have to pay some tax on the interest I earned in my foreign bank.

Hi JoJoJoJo.

I was able to process my tax return using Turbo tax filing jointly and also excluded my foreign income based on tax treaty between Canada and USA.

Be very careful with tax treaties.

If you lived in the US for just a week, you might not have to file (unless you had enough income during that last week).
