Hello everyone,

I have a question about the financial sponsorship when we get to the embassy stage (still waiting on NOA2 right now).

I am a PhD student in the sciences and as such I am paid by my university to conduct research and to teach classes.  Our graduate students last year voted to unionize, so now we are technically employees and not students- not sure if this helps.  The stipend is a little more than twice the required amount of the poverty limit (I make 34k/year) and I have 5 years of IRS forms proving this amount or above.

My program takes about 6 years, so I have 2-3 years left.  My question is: does this count as stable employment?  It's technically temporary as it will end when I graduate in a few years.  Does this matter? I would hate to get to the interview and have them question my ability to support based on the fact that my job title is "graduate student" and not permanent employment.  My parents have offered to cosponsor, but I would like to be able to do it myself if possible.

Thoughts or any similar situations out there?

Happy waiting :)

no job is stable or permanent job, as long as you filed taxes, and you have copies of your W2, then you will be fine with what you have.

Agreed, as long as you can show you're able to currently provide for your beneficiary, as well as have earned enough in previous years to prove you're above the income threshold, you should have no problem. Every country is different, though, so if you're worried it won't be enough, you could always include a parent as a cosponsor, just to be on the safe side. But I think you shouldn't have a problem.

All jobs are temporary, nobody lives forever.

“If you know the enemy and know yourself, you need not fear the result of a hundred battles. If you know yourself but not the enemy, for every victory gained you will also suffer a defeat. If you know neither the enemy nor yourself, you will succumb in every battle.”
