Canadian U.S. Green Card holder passport

Hi folks,

My husband lives here in the U.S. with a green card. He is originally from Canada.

We want to travel to Italy later this year and I was wondering if he needed a Canadian passport or a U.S. passport to travel?

If he is only a GC holder i.e. a Legal Permanent Resident - and therefore not a US citizen - he will need a Canadian passport.

He cannot obtain a US passport unless/until he becomes a US citizen.

His Canadian passport is still perfectly valid to use.

He can’t get a US passport until he naturalizes. So Canadian.  

Many people have more than 1 passport and use whichever suits them better for particular travel, normally the only restrictions on “must use” are entering and leaving the country of which you hold a passport.
