Good afternoon I wanted to ask if anyone has gone through the immigration medical exam for a green card through Ciudad Juárez, my husbands appointment is coming up and about 2 weeks ago we went to a party and he inadvertently had come cake which he didn’t know had marihuana we don’t smoke drink or do drugs we’re both vegan have been for about 4 yrs and this has me really worried, I know immigration will not believe his story if he’s honest  being that I guess now it’s the norm to either smoke or have it in desserts. I just don’t want this to affect him. Please if anyone has some helpful information I thank you in advance. Feel free to send me a private message if you don’t feel comfortable posting publicly.

I’m no expert, but consumed marijuana does not stay in your system long especially if you’re not a regular smoker. I’m no smoker, but I’ve “experimented” once and took my own personal at home test because I was afraid that it’ll come up positive at a drug test appointment & it didn’t. Obviously this was a urine test, I’m not sure how medicals for USCIS goes. Although I don’t believe you have anything to worry about, you can also just purchase your own at home test if it’s available where your partner is just to be safe.

I don't want to alarm you but they do take a blood sample which will show if there were any drugs in your system. A urine sample is easy to by pass but not for blood. I'd personally wait 30 days or more till it clears the system.

I would second britishandusa  statement. Wait and have it rescheduled. One of the questions that were asked to my husband when he went through Juarez at the interview was if he used drugs. From my understanding if the answer is yes then there a whole blood work that will need to be done. I wouldnt say for him to lie but there could be an issue of him getting approved if he answers yes. even though it was unintentional.

@gsdc23 I didn’t think of buying a home test, thank you I will definitely buy one for my husband. You’ve put me at ease I just got scared because a few people told me it would be about 30 days. Thank you!

No problem! I say definitely take the advice of the other VJ members responding to your post as well but just wanted to share my personal experience. I hope all goes well and I wish you luck in your journey ☺️.

@britishandusa  @gtiorobertsf Oh wow I thought the blood test was just for syphilis, man now I’m more worried since we already made travel arrangements. This mistake can really hurt him then, smh, we did everything right and now he can get denied over something like this.  Thank you for your advice, really appreciate it

Your correct the blood is for syphillis and urine for drugs. I beleive if the answer is yes to drug use then there is blood work. If the test comes back positive im sure he wont be allowed in.

Blood test is for syphilis but it is definitely ran for anything else in the system. When I took my job as medical assistant, they also did a urine sample and blood draw to check my system. People can alter their urine sample for a different answer which is why embassies do both urine and blood because you can't (or very difficult) to alter answers from the blood.

@britishandusa oh wow this is getting ugly. I spoke to someone who recently had his medical exam for immigration and he mentioned to me that he overheard someone in the clinic say that they only test you for drugs if you check yes to having ever used any controlled substance not saying he should lie but he said it’s not routine and the blood is for syphilis and the urine sample is for ghonorrea not sure how accurate this is but I just feel bad for him not being more careful he had no way of knowing and now who knows what would happen. I just told him to be honest and pray for the best.

I work for a hospital and with the labs.  The post above is incorrect.  Blood test is only to detect current levels for a DUI, and is accurate to show if someone is high at the moment and how much they recently consumed.  It clears out of the blood about as fast as alcohol.  The metabolite doesn't reside in the blood.

Three days will get people who are casual users down to most lab thresholds, but a week is even better.
