So just a minor update / frustrating experience. We finally got the actual 18 month extension letter, after having just the "courtesy copy" for about 2 months.

About 2 weeks ago Danielle called USCIS to bring up how she had only received the "courtesy copy" and had yet to receive the actual copy, and she also brought up the fact that we have heard absolutely nothing in regards to biometrics whatsoever (no appointment letter nor a notice saying they will reuse the old ones). For the biometrics thing, they looked into her case and said the usual "processing times are taking longer, so you may not receive one at all, but our records show that you haven't been scheduled for one so you haven't missed anything", so that was good.

As for not receiving the actual 18 month extension letter, Danielle was told that "oh since you have a receipt number, I can't tell you anything about your case", and the representative ended the call. This made absolutely no sense considering they just told her something about her case in regards to biometrics. Anyway, when I got home from work I had Danielle call them again, and then give them permission to talk to me (since they won't talk to anyone but the applicant unless the applicant is present) and I told this representative about Danielle's previous call and what that representative said and they were completely dumbfounded and said "that doesn't make any sense, why would they say that to you?", and then she proceeded to look into our case, and put in an inquiry about us not receiving the 18 month extension letter, just the "courtesy copy", and gave us a reference number for when they give us an update on this inquiry, so we were relieved after speaking with that representative.

So then after a few days, we get the standard email from USCIS after they put in an inquiry and they update it. It contains a summary of why you called and the action they were taking. I was a little concerned, because in that summary it sounded like we said we hadn't received any notice whatsoever after sending in the I-751, and nothing about the 18 month extension was mentioned in the summary, which was frustrating because I was on the phone with the representative as she was typing it and she was reading it out loud to me as she typed it.

So we were getting ready to call USCIS yet again this past week to discuss this because we want to make sure they are looking into the right thing, but we lost track of time the one day during the week where Danielle and I have free time during their hours of operation. Then yesterday in the mail, we got the actual copy of the 18 month extension letter!

So I guess the takeaway from this here, and it falls in line with some other posts I've read, is that if you've only just received the "courtesy copy" of the 18 month extension letter, and it'd been more than 30 days, then it's probably best to call them and get them to look into it. No idea why this is the case, but then again, this whole process is anything but convenient. Good luck everyone!

I see on informed delivery that I have a letter from USCIS to us, arriving today.  This is the first letter we're receiving since the extension letter.  I will update on the contents later.  Everyone, keep your eyes open...something maybe starting to happen again.

They sent out new 18 month extension letters earlier this week. I bet that's what it is. Is your 18 month an original or a copy?

Still waiting on our original, maybe it'll be coming soon since you just got yours.  Got our gray version notice months ago.

Helps make sense why I hear about some people here and in other threads getting proper 18 month notices now.  Hope to get ours soon as well.

Got a letter coming today from USCIS, probably the 18 month extension instead of the notice only.  Still, it will be nice to have.

We just received another official (green paper) copy of the 18 month extension letter, about a week after we received the first one (which I believe was from us calling them telling them we hadn't received one by then).

I like to think it was because of your hard work that the rest of us who only got gray copies are now getting legit green copies that we can use for travel and other things.  Getting two copies isn't that bad, good to have a spare.  After reading your post a week ago we were going to call by November 1 if we didn't get the actual 18 month letter by that time.  I'm glad you got yours figured out even though it shouldn't have taken nearly this long.
