JAIPUR, India (Reuters) - An Indian court ordered the arrest of Hollywood star Richard Gere Thursday for kissing Bollywood actress Shilpa Shetty at an AIDS campaign event this month saying it was an obscene act committed in public.

Gere's repeated kisses on Shetty's cheeks at an event to promote AIDS awareness in New Delhi sparked protests in some parts of India, mostly by Hindu vigilante groups, who saw it as an outrage against her modesty and an affront to Indian culture.

The order by a court in the northern city of Jaipur came in response to a complaint by a local lawyer.

The judge watched a video recording of Gere kissing Shetty and found him guilty of violating Indian laws against public obscenity, the lawyer, Poonam Chand Bhandari, said.

I agree. Why he didn't know that it's not acceptable in India, he forgot to do his research (dumb!). But the warrant is just stupid.

India has a lot of other problems they should be focusing on.

I read in another report that this happens alot in India. Mainly due to attention and fame seekers who file a complaint and then get their five minutes of fame. India's law courts are backed up with complaints of a similar nature which, of course, means that the more serious offences get pushed back even more.

I wonder if they're going to start issuing warrants for all the prostitutes and those that frequent them? That's an "acceptable" part of Indian society. Why isn't a foreigner kissing a movie star in public?

To me thats simply hypocracy

if the same shilpa kiss some one in a bollywood movie thats oright but if Richard Gere does that ...i dont think thats reasonable.

any ways thats what happens in Asian COuntry same hapend when a Pkaistani actress went to india to play a role in an Indian film and same reaction was recorded by Pakistanies.i think this is simply hypocracy.

I can't see his tongue or her ear. If his tongue is in her ear, then either he has a very long (and invisible) tongue, or her ear is about two inches lower than where it should be
