Have you ever encountered the civilian sirens? (like, non-drill)

You mean like for rockets? Of course. I was there in 2006 when rockets rained all over the place during the war with Hezbollah...some actually fell not that far from our house. Here's another long story for ya: I am a bit of a "fatalist" when it comes to those things which means I think whatever happens happens so during the first two weeks when people technically didn't "have to" go to work and wouldn't have gotten fired for it but not paid for it either my dad and I as well as many other people actually kept going. Even when there were sirens while I was at work and the vast majority of people would go to the shelter I stayed right where I was because I hate getting interrupted when I'm in the middle of something and at times literally as soon as you came back there would be another one and you'd have to stop everything again. So I stayed put and where I worked at the time was 45 minutes away from our house so many sirens on the way to work and back as well. Anyway the next 2 weeks everyone was back to work even though the war wasn't over yet - and then some workplaces offered bonuses to people like me who came in in the first two weeks even thoughb they didn't have to.

The funny thing is other people that only came back to work once they were forced to were whining and complaining they didn't get a bonus because "they were taking a risk too"...well duh, there's a diff between doing it voluntarily or not, they didn't deserve the bonuses we got. My mom wanted to leave Haifa anf go stay with my sister in Jerusalem which at the time was out of the reach of those particular rockets(now it's not anymore) so my dad and I ended up compromising with her and just spent 1 weekend there. We had what's called a "protected space" in our house so most times I would be fine with going there when there was a siren, unless I was taking a shower or sleeping then I would refuse to lol. I was still living with my parents(people there usually stay with their parents and save some money till after the backpacking trip whcih comes after military service) and the computer also happened to be in that room cause it is used as a normal room most times and I still remember I was actually talking to my now wife - gf at the time online when one of the sirens went off and my parents werein the room and kept wanting me to get off the chair and sit down on the floor with them because you're supposed to be as low as possible so I just lifted the lever that lowers the seat of the chair I was sitting on at the time and went "there" lol. At times when I would have to go close the metal window once there was a siren I would actually tell my wife "brb siren" :D

But yeah...to answer your question! haha...we heard the booms and pretty loud, some of them were not that far away from us at all...one hit across the st from where my mom worked at the time(she wasn't at work as it was at night). We would actually sit there and try and guess how close they hit based on how loud it sounded. I know it's a long read but I can give ya stories all day long.

tbh those people sound like wusses.. no offense to them.

Just like the people in Calgary who refused to go to work when it was -45C (-49F) last year.

So you're the immigrant and not your SO?

I also heard the sirens go off anyways even when the dome shreds the rocket.. is that true?

Didn't have iron dome at the time. If it was shot, it hit someplace. But yes they do go off because it can miss so better to be safe than sorry. It calculates the trajectory and if it's not supposed to hit a populated place though then they don't go off nor does it even try to intercept. Yes I'm the immigrant, I believe most here already know this but didn't realize you didn't,

I said that very quote to someone the other day

Did he tell you to just move up to the second window if you want your food?

I'm rather oblivious when it comes to forum stuff. ;)

Anyways, the only comparable experience I have with Israelis is South Koreans.

I worked for a gaming company thats office was inside an HQ sponsored by the SK government for start-ups abroad (in the sense of initial investments abroad, not necessarily a new company).

I had never seen so many people chain smoking in my life. I was like the only one who didn't smoke. Of course, I realized that the reason they were like this was because that was their coping mechanism for the state of fear they were always in due to the North Korea situation.

I have a very expressed interest in how people psychologically react to those states of persistent fear, especially when it comes to violence and war. The apparent matter of fact way Israelis react is a different thing to me. But also, I don't think they really fear any kind of annihilation, given they could destroy everyone around them in a matter of hours.

Churchill would stand on the roof in a helmet in the middle of raids during the Blitz. His staff would try to get him into the bunker but he would refuse.

Just a random thought when I read about your defiance :)

Yeah, you can't let it run your life. Life would pretty much go on as normal, there'd be plenty of people out at the mall etc. The lazy ones just didn't work when they didn't have to because it was a convenient excuse and then wanted bonuses lol but I betcha they spent some time at the mall.

Yep, I know all about that attitude, hung a few ex-coworkers out to dry who were like that.
