I suppose then the question becomes WHY should we?  Are we to be every country's savior?  I really don't know overall.  I'm on the fence.

What visa class would they use, or would it be a new class of visa for relatively unskilled workers.  Also, as you said, should the US be the savior for every country?

I would be for it (unskilled) IF it had heavy sanctions attached and harsh penalties if welfare was used for anything short of a career ending injury or illness.

Unskilled workers are, as we already know are a significant backbone of making this country function. They are willing to work and hard, harder than even our own citizens. Legal or not legal, to a degree they may have an even stronger belief in 'the American' dream, in terms of working hard and making something of oneself. Why not have a new visa class? They have the money, are willing to work hard.. desperate to live their lives free of horrific conditions, they just don't have the pathway that others receive. Proactive instead of reactive, why can't we just have smart immigration laws that actually work?

Agreed. As for being a savior.. well to a degree, isn't that what this country exists because of? That is the American dream. That someone who is poor, comes from nothing, downtrodden, abused.. can find freedom and success. We've been this way from our very existence as a nation. Immigrants built who we are. I think of the horrible conditions in many Latin American countries, Middle Eastern countries, and African countries. We seem to do very little about what goes on in those countries.. except for the Middle East (and often make things a lot worse for doing so). Conditions we cannot even begin to imagine. While I do not agree with illegal immigration, I have empathy for those who do so because of desperation. That same desperation is what brought our ancestors to this new world.

This is the thing though my husband and I were talking about the other night...  for a lot of these people they are in desperate situations. We offer little to no legal pathway for those people to enter the country legally. So they feel they have no other option but to save up and put their money and their lives in the hands of a coyote to get in. Imagine if we did offer an actual legal pathway for them to enter in the first place. They obviously do have some money, and likely if they had the option to not put their lives in danger, live in the shadows etc they'd be more apt to follow the process legally - so the fees for paperwork shouldn't be too much trouble right? Why can't we reform the system and make it work?

Pretty much the same situation if you have no money and need to make a substantial bank withdrawal, what are you expected to do?

There needs to be a way other than a stick up.

There is another way - its to work hard, don't get involved in drugs or gangs or criminal activity, make smart decisions, and save money.

Potential new immigrants in a new visa class should receive just as much security screening, and pay all the same fees we have to do. We could tack on some other requirements perhaps, like pre-requisite language classes, no welfare access (which is the same for everyone) and a few other restrictions too. They are certainly willing to work and do the things our own citizens won't do. More fees coming in, taxes being paid, visa opportunities helping to curb a big motivation for illegal immigration, continue to deport those skipping the line or sneaking around or committing crimes, while you get rid of the other loopholes that no one wants to address. Sounds like a win win.

What visa is available to the average 'illegal' immigrant, low-skilled worker, that has no family members present to sponsor them, or an American fiancé or spouse? You know those that are not into criminal activity are coming here because there is no pathway or trying to reach a family member already here. When you give people real legal opportunities to contribute, we might be surprised by the results.

How about the people who are harassed by the drug cartels and doesn't want anything to do with them? Who has not been involved with them at all or even drugs.

That's what refugee programs are for.

Trying to wrap my mind around the mind boggling idea that foreigners get a pass to break US laws because of things people in other countries do. Where do people think this stuff up?

the kid in the article that died, while i haven't looked into whatever 'gangster' nonsense cited here, had lived here, gone to school here - was deported - and just wanted to get back. we have a moral responsibility, imo, to deal with those who are already here and spent the majority of their lives here in ways other than kicking them out of the country. i don't care how you feel about people breaking the law, deporting people who have been here since childhood and brought here by parents should not in any way shape or form be punished, and certainly not by deportation. willingly stuffing yourself into a death trap to get back to your friends and family shows a desperation that many of us might be able to recognize, if we didn't have avenues toward citizenship for our loved ones.

I'm not saying anyone should get a free pass breaking laws. I just think it is sad that some people feel so threatened by these cartels that they feel that their only option is to sneak into the US.

I agree. So many children do not choose to be here. They are brought her by their parents, live their entire life in the US and then get deported to a country they have never been to.
