Doctors Flee Desperate Venezuela to Work in Safer Places

ANCUD, Chile—On a recent day in this remote island town, Dr. Jhomar Yansen rushed to operate on a man who had been kicked in the gut by a sheep and was suffering severe internal bleeding.

The surgeon worked in his native Venezuela saving patients with gunshot and knife wounds until last year, when he fled the chaotic, impoverished country like thousands of other professionals. Now he finds himself as part of a cluster of Venezuelan physicians looking after fishermen and shepherds here on a green archipelago in the frigid Southern Pacific.

“This isn’t exactly where I thought I’d work,” said Dr. Yansen, who lives here with his wife, also a doctor, and their infant daughter. “But thank God I’m here. I didn’t want my daughter to grow up in such a hostile environment.”

THERE IS A certain irony in recent news that Venezuela donated a half million dollars to Donald Trump’s presidential inauguration through Petróleos de Venezuela, the state-owned oil company. Venezuela, of course, is a serial defaulter, having done so more times than any other country over the last two centuries.

Recently, Venezuela’s despotic socialist government has been so desperate to avoid another default (which would be the country’s 11th since independence) that it mortgaged its industrial crown jewels, including the US-based refiner Citgo, to the Russians and the Chinese.

It is not exactly clear why President Nicolás Maduro of Venezuela is so desperate to avoid defaulting on the country’s foreign debt that he is starving his own people, much the way Romanian dictator Nicolae Ceausescu did in the 1980s. With such severe shortages of food and basic medicines, there is little doubt that, if and when the autocrat is finally deposed, there will be some eerily familiar horror stories.

It is simplistic to portray the Venezuelan tragedy as an apocryphal tale of what happens when a country is taken over by left-wing populists. The right-wing governments of the 1980s and 1990s were also corrupt; and, while national income rose, income distribution was among the most unequal in the world. But it is true that Venezuela’s current horror show is very much a product of two decades of left-wing misgovernment.

The same might not be far off for Ecuador, if these infernal socialists somehow keep getting elected.

Seriously, I never understood, but then I do, how these things happen in these countries. How can someone steal an election and not get caught?

In Ecu, voting is compulsory, and the penalties for skipping out on voting are severe.

Moreno's predecessor, the socialist Rafael Correa, was known to bribe the poor with $50 each, or some such, to vote for him.

No one in or out of Ecu has made claims of "stealing," but maybe some "buying" was going on.
