Thank you Cincyman

same as mine.  I could not verify too as I don't have DOS. I just sent out the app online. Hopefully, it's fine : )

How did it go without the verifying?  I'm in the same situation.  We just did my husband's N400 online but we cannot do the verification because as aK1 visa couple, I don't think he got a DOS ID.

I don't want to start a whole new thread, so just wondering if someone can let me know if filing an N400 is mandatory or once i get my 10 year green card I can just keep renewing it every 10 years?

I can't find an answer online .. maybe someone here knows? Sorry if its a stupid question!

You can stay as a permanent resident ( GC) status as long as you like.  GC has some restrictions- You can not vote and you would not be able to get federal government jobs.  Also, if you stay out more than a year outside the country, it will be not easy to come back without prior permission.

like someone already mentioned, it is not mandatory, you can renew GC every 10 year and I am sure the fee will go up next time around.  In addition to not able to vote and apply for federal government jobs, you may risk deportation if you commit any crime even misdemeanor ones.

It's not mandatory at all.  Some countries do not allow dual citizenship, which leads some members to never apply for Naturalization (luckily, Canada is not one of those countries).  Some people just have no interest in becoming citizens (which is fine as well).

I applied for Naturalization last year because my 10 year card was up for renewal, and the price of the i-90 and N400 was almost equal.  The second and only other factor in my decision was to be able to travel freely for any length of time and not get stressed over reentry.

At my own oath ceremony, I met a man who'd been an LPR for over 30 years.  When I asked him why he finally applied for citizenship he told me he was tired of paying the fees.

Fees with USCIS only go up and up, so keep that in mind as well if you are debating it later on.

Hi guys, just a question on how to fill up the Time Outside the United States part. It says "...during the last 5 years."

Does it mean 5 years from your date of filing (ie. Filing date = March 1, 2019; last 5 years is March 1, 2014)? Or are you supposed to list trips starting from January 1, 2014? Thanks in advance.

I am going to apply for my N-400 soon and was wondering if I need my wife's birth certificate during the application or will I be asked for it during the actual interview ? She is a natural born citizen and her passport lists the place of birth as the US. We don't have her original birth certificate and was wondering if we had to apply for a copy ? Any guidance would be appreciated !
