The "world's first operational Robocop" has been unveiled in Dubai as part of the emirate's planned robot police force.

Robocop started work on Sunday and is already making a name for itself.

At 5ft 5in tall and weighing 100kg, it can speak six languages and is designed to read facial expressions.

It had an easy start to working life, being unveiled at the three-day long Gulf Information Security Expo and Conference.

But when the Expo draws to a close tomorrow, it will be released into the wider world and tackle real life issues.

The machine has a built-in tablet so people can use it pay fines or report crimes, and can also transmit and receive messages from police headquarters.

06-04-2007 = TSC stamps postal return-receipt for I-129f.

06-11-2007 = NOA1 date (unknown to me).

07-20-2007 = Phoned Immigration Officer; got WAC#; where's NOA1?

09-25-2007 = Touch (first-ever).

09-28-2007 = NOA1, 23 days after their 45-day promise to send it (grrrr).

10-20 & 11-14-2007 = Phoned ImmOffs; "still pending."

12-11-2007 = 180 days; file is "between workstations, may be early Jan."; touches 12/11 & 12/12.

12-18-2007 = Call; file is with Division 9 ofcr. (bckgrnd check); e-prompt to shake it; touch.

12-19-2007 = NOA2 by e-mail & web, dated 12-18-07 (187 days; 201 per VJ); in mail 12/24/07.

07-2008 = Daily calls to DOS: "currently processing"; 8/05 = Phoned consulate, got Section Chief; wrote him.

08-07-08 = E-mail from consulate, promising to issue visa "as soon as we get her passport" (on 8/12, per DHL).

08-27-08 = Phoned consulate (they "couldn't find" our file); visa DHL'd 8/28; in hand 9/1; through POE on 10/9 with NO hassles(!).

I don't know what the law is like there but if they tried using those things here the point you raise would certainly be a valid defense in court. Everyone has the right to face their accuser.

Ugh I hate those. We don't have them over here in VT...yet...thankfully, but Israel is FULL of them.

A lot of people have successfully had tickets from cameras thrown out by challenging them based on the fact they can't face their accuser and the tickets most of the time aren't issued by police officers.

Around here, they're a civil offense, and one's driver's-license renewal can be withheld if the fines aren't paid...

Ok, I will ask the obvious question, are these robots judged by the three laws?  Also, what kind of ROEs will they have?  The story is a bit thin on any details, and make these robots out to be more like information clerks.

I dunno in Calgary if they prevent your license from being renewed especially if you have multiple people registered to a vehicle.. the speed cams, red light cams, and photo radar pictures from police cruisers are ticketed to the vehicle, rather than the person. I believe they can halt the vehicles registrations if they have unpaid tickets.

 

But I do know that red light and speed cams are all over the city, and they regularly have cops hiding all over as well snapping photos of people. When they review the red light and speed cams they make sure a sworn bylaws officer is processing and approving it. Here they have a lot of the angles covered. While in California I was vehemently opposed to these cameras, all the stupid drivers in Calgary have changed my mind.. they're the ones getting the tickets anyways. TBH though it would have been nice to have these in the GTA (Toronto metro), I've yet to experience more stupidly dangerous drivers.. hence the insane insurance premiums.
