Sad! :(

Detroit police say the death of rocker Chris Cornell, the lead singer of the bands Soundgarden and later Audioslave, is being investigated as a possible suicide.

Police spokesman Michael Woody tells The Associated Press on Thursday morning that he can't provide details on what led investigators to make that determination, but noted there were "basic things observed at the scene."

Haven't heard anything from him since the mid 90s, but given how much he was into drugs this sadly doesn't surprise me.

Was SG even together still?

He formed Audioslave with former members of RATM and had great success with that for a while until they broke up around 2007 or so? I'm still very fond of that fantastic album. He had come back together with SG and was playing numerous tour gigs. Rather sad that one of his final twitter messages was a sweet one about Mother's Day.

Chris Cornell's widow, Vicky, has issued a statement following the release of a toxicology report which points to her late husband's struggles with substance abuse.

“Many of us who know Chris well, noticed that he wasn't himself during his final hours and that something was very off. We have learned from this report that several substances were found in his system," Vicky said in a statement. "After so many years of sobriety, this moment of terrible judgment seems to have completely impaired and altered his state of mind. Something clearly went terribly wrong and my children and I are heartbroken and are devastated that this moment can never be taken back."

Her statement continued, “We very much appreciate all of the love we have received during this extremely difficult time and are dedicated to helping others in preventing this type of tragedy.”

Cornell crowdsurfed during RIP magazine’s fifth-anniversary party at the Hollywood Palladium in October 1991.

The toxicology report comes amid uncertainty surrounding Cornell's death on May 17, when he was found to have hung himself in a Detroit hotel room after playing a show with Soundgarden.

Last month, Vicky expressed in a statement fears that her husband may have accidentally taken too much of the prescription mood-stabilizing drug Ativan. While the Soundgarden singer's death was deemed a suicide by the medical examiner, an attorney for the family claimed Thursday (June 1) that the singer's death should not be assumed a suicide until a proper toxicology report could be completed.

According to a report obtained by TMZ, Cornell had Naloxone, the sedative Butalbital, Ativan, the decongestant Pseudoephedrine and barbiturates in his system at his time of death.

This is really sad. Back in the days when Audioslave was started, I considered Chris a musical genius. I wasn't into most of their new songs, but one of those I did like - listening to the lyrics now is pretty ironic under the circumstances-
