the K-1 process takes many months, for us it was 8 months, so I guess you could start putting money aside maybe for her plane ticket to come and for the cost of the K-1 + AOS once she is here? The summer is here soon and if you can find another job while your classes are off maybe it could be enough ?

Yeah, that's basically the only plan I have to go on. I just have to make sure I have enough for more school next year.

One thing I wanted to remind you of:

even if you manage to get the money together for the visa, flight and AOS- don't forget that once she's in the US, she will very likely not be able to work right away.

She will depend on you or your family until she's free to work.

How much longer do you have until you graduate?

I have a year and a half until I graduate. I'm not too worried about when she gets here, I know we can find a way from there.

Get your degree first, then see if you can pay your debts, then think about bringing her to the USA,

if you can't do that, then go to her country and live there for a while.

I understand your situation. The old saying is, "Love doesn't cost a thing"? I'll be honest and tell you when going through this process, yes it does cost from the very start of K-1. I don't know if you looked at the cost of all the fees involved. But supposedly these fees are going to be almost doubled during this year. I'm not going to tell you how to live your life. But if your life isn't situated at this time, or somewhat stable, I think it's going to be extremely difficult for you trying to go through the visa process.

I'm a broke college student, I go to CC and live in my parents basement. I'm 20 years old 8-9k in debt and still going to school. I work one to two days a week because I can't work more with all the classes I have to take to maintain health insurance on my parent's bill. I met my Fiance in High School, and we dated for 3 years and during that time I managed to save up enough money to go visit her last summer, in Georgia (the country). I asked her to marry me in January of '07. I can barely afford car insurance each month to get to and from school, let alone gas, I'd be kaput if it weren't for my parents. She's living in Tbilisi, also under a roof her parents own, she'd have to sell it just to be able to afford the plane ticket here. We need to get together as soon as possible, and another 6-9 months minimum might be a death sentance to us. I'm just starting now because I had no idea how long it took and ~sighs~ I'm feeling pretty hopeless. Could someone who knows something tell me about these things direct me on where to start, tell me about someone who's had it harder to make me feel better, or just put us out of our misery and tell me to simply go there and give up hope on a safe place to raise our children and a chance to achieve our professional and personal goals?

You are not too young to be in love but you have not yet achieved a status in life that provides adequate support to a wife half a world away. We humans make practical decisions every day. It's part of adult life. If you see a positive future then work toward it. You have many options from which to choose. Nobody has forced your current circumstances on you. You can change them if you wish.

If you see a way to overcome the practical aspects of your dilema and you can convince a co-sponsor to back you, then go for it. If not, you'll have to wait until circumstances change before being together in the USA. Nobody owes you an easy road in life. You build your own road.

Facts are cheap...knowing how to use them is precious...
Understanding the big picture is priceless. Anonymous

if your doing the K-1 , then yes just get someone that makes 125% above poverty level, have prrof or w.e. on having met and file the petition an have patience and good luck ^_^

hi. :) just a couple of questions (and this goes out to everyone):

1) does 125% above the poverty line = $17,112 (annual income)? and,

2) if you have two willing co-sponsors (say, for instance, a set of parents), must at least one of them induvidually earn above $17,112, or is it sufficient that their collective incomes together surpass that amount?

cheers.

I waited until graduated from college and then we waited a little more until I finished my masters degree. It was tough because we waited a long time but we didn't want to rely on our family. Because when he gets here we would be all one our own. I know I would have to support him for awhile till he gets a good job. So I taught for 4 years and made sure I was above poverty level. I know your in love and this waiting thing won't work for you. We met when he was 15 and I was 19. We waited until he was 24 and I was 27 to get married. But it was not to expensive for me to go to Jamaica.

I would use a co-sponsor. If I was in love I would go to school and work a couple more days. If you want something then go for it. Maybe delivering pizzas on the weekend or working nights at Fed Ex. Good luck with your decision.

Met Jan 1998, vows on 2006, Jay Jay born 2008, baby 2 - 2011

If 6-9 months more waiting is going to make or break your relationship, you have more things to worry about than to how to afford the K1/AOS process.

Getting a co-sponsor is not really the answer, you are unable to support her when she gets here and she will be unable to work in the beginning.

Why dont you finish your studies then bring her here.

Believe me love cost nothing..............but love dont pay the bills!!

I agree w u TracyTN but I understand him too...

I have spent so many nights on skype striving to keep the butterflies in my stomach when he smiles and not to forget the expression of his eyes when he looks at me...

It is hard, may be it is just me, but it is hard to keep the feelings as fresh as when we were together for last time...

I don't know whether it is a "death sentence" but it definetely deprives us from something very precious that most people do not even notice in their relationship - the enjoyment of the other person's presence, how much u need a hug sometimes or just a shoulder to cry on, or his jokes and kisses to make ur day bright again...Oh God I miss him...

I understand why he thinks it might be a "death sentence". It does need strong people to go though all this.

I've been in a long distance relationship for just over 3 years now, so believe me, I know how hard it is to just want to hold his hand or hug him and you can't. That's something that everyone on this site has endured.

To say that is a 'death sentence' for your relationship, though, implies that the relationship won't make it unless you're physically together. My point is simply to say if that is true, then good luck making it.

Everybody has endured that I agree, but I have had his doubts so I am just saying that I understand him too...

He just needs some more reasurrance, sometimes you do not how strong you could be and how much you can really love.

So good luck on your journey, if you love her and you really want her you can do it, believe me the "death sentence" would come only when you give up.

Playing a little devil advocate. DON't GIVE UP

The love you have for each other will only grow with ages, and your girlfriend will be proud of you, IThere are a lot of expenses associated with this process, from the filing fees, to your fiancee ticket to move here, filing AOS and so on, In your case you would need a cosponsor for your fiance. But look at things in the long term, you are a college student, you mentioned your parents are strugling financialy also, would you want to bring another person into the mix? It's what you call TOUGH LOVE, plan on finishing your college, improving your future and that way you would be helping yourself and your future family
