Hey all,

I have my Social Security from way back last year. It says on it "Valid for work only with DHS authorization"

Now I have my EAD, my question is, do I need to go back to hell (aka the social security office) to have them create a NEW card for me, or do I wait until my 2 year GC, or what?

Because I am now eligible to work but obviously my SSN has this message printed on it...

I-129F sent: 2016-04-27

NOA1 Email & Text: 2016-05-04

NOA1 Received in Mail: 2016-05-18

NOA2 Email & Text: 2016-07-06 (63 DAYS!)

NOA2 Received in Mail: 2016-07-18

The 'valid only..' text will get removed once you have your green card. Now it means you can use your SSN for work only accompanied with a valid work authorization.

Exactly. I had to return to SSN office once I received my GC to have that "'valid for work only..." wording removed.

Hi I just read this and I have no idea that I have to return to SSN office after getting 2 year GC. I'm about to send off my ROC this month. Am I in trouble?

You dont NEED to return to the SS office to have the wording removed. Most people do because they are 1-excited to have gotten their GC and 2- it helps you feel more like a 'regular' citizen if that makes sense.

Technically the Greencard is 'proof of DHS authorization" for employers. The SSA writes it on ss cards for people who are  or may not be eligible to work because people can have a SS number but be on a visa type that doesnt allow for working... Some employers are not informed sadly and think if you have a SS card/number then you MUST be allowed to work, but thats not true- hence the writing.

Theres no difference to employers or the SS branch of the goverment between having a card that says 'needs DHS proof' + a GC OR someone showing a card with no writing and the GC. (however some people feel discriminated against if they have the card with writing on it- questions may be asked about how long you are able to stay in the country-{job could go to someone else} Bank account opening can be more harassing as well as trying to apply for a loan or mortgage. So most people get the wording removed, but again- its not a requirement).
