I often think about what would happen if an escalator fails.  I once saw one undergoing maintenance and was amazed by the machinery under the stairs.  I still use them, but will always take the stairs when that option is convenient.

Dozens of people were injured when an escalator at a Hong Kong shopping centre malfunctioned.

A spokesperson for the Langham Place centre said the escalator had passed a recent safety inspection.

It has asked the maintenance company to investigate the cause of the accident.

Escalators in china are even worse, lots of accident with fatalities in recent years. When it's in a more "regulated" environment(like the US) I never feel unsafe using them though.

It is interesting you mentioned Australia.  I was in a mall in Geelong a few years back, and saw some people using the moving ramps and escalators in bare feet.  Though this is not relevant to the incident in China, I always thought that this was just not right.
