Hello VJers!

I am thinking of getting a medical insurance since my wife recently filed for her tax return and she was advised to get me medical coverage. She was supposed to enroll me in her plan when we got married last November but the thing is, the premium would significantly increase. I heard about short-term insurance plans but I read something about those not being subject to the ACA (affordable care act), so I don't think they would count as valid medical coverage that would help in next year's tax return filing. The tax advisor said that we would incur a fine monthly for each month that I was without coverage, and quite frankly that worries us.

Anyone with the same experience? Is it possible for me to obtain health insurance while on AOS? and if yes, what are my options? We didn't know there was a bearing for this issue when it comes to tax filing :(

Hello, yes I believe you have to get health insurance. You will incur a penalty (though I think that has been waived under Trump). Of course, since yesterday, Speaker Ryan said Obamacare is now the law of the land...does it include the penalty too? Not sure.

I would think the least expensive plan would be under your wife's plan? The insurance you are talking about might be catastrophic insurance which does not provide for regular visits, just if you have an accident etc....
