How long does it take to receive a social security card if you come over on a spousal visa.  Its been 3 weeks since my husbands arrival.  Was told that immigration now applies for the SSN#.  We were told if nothing received after 3 weeks come into the office. What have other people experienced as for waiting times

Back in 2008, I applied, waited 2 weeks, went back, applied again, nothing, waited 2 weeks, went back, in 2 days I received an envelope that had 2 cards, same number and an application form.....in the same envelope .... I had a GC but no SSN so I could not work for the first 2 mos and a half....

  • sending I130 05/16/2007
  • cheque is cashed on 06/11/2007
  • NOA1 in mail 06/13/2007 (who said 13 is badluck )
  • 07/30/2007 After no touches and no other signs we just got an email with the APPROVAL of I130....Thank God !....now what ?

  • 08/07/2007 Case received by NVC and case number assigned :))

  • 08/13/2007 DS3032 and AOS bill were generated

  • 08/14/2007 Emailed choice of agent ...i'm so curious when they will accept it...hopefully soon

  • 08/21/2007 DS3032 and AOS fee bill arive in mail

  • 08/27/2007 paid AOS fee bill
  • 8/28/2007 DS3032 choice of agent accepted
  • 9/3/2007 IV fee bill generated

Hello,

Thank you for your response.  Now immigration applies for your SSN# from the packet you give them at POE.  They say give it two-three weeks.  Its been 3 weeks for us now we are going to the office today.

ok - so they must have changed the process - the one thing about SSN Admin is you can only go see them every 2 weeks... if you go earlier they won't even bother.... so today may work....make sure you take copies of all paperwork in case they offer you an application form to do it for yourself....

If spousal visa, you should get it with in 4 weeks from the date of submitting your application at the local SSA office.

Hi the new process is that immigration submits the information for you, but in 2 to 3 weeks you must go into the office.  So whereas immigration submitted it, maybe it is still approx. 4 weeks.

Thank You,

Renee

When you say immigration submits it, are you referring to checking the box for them to send it automatically? I checked that box but didn't wait. Husband arrived on a Wed. My mom took him to SS on Mon, he received SS card in Friday...

So they really apply for us ? I'm having some real difficulties with the SSN right now as well , except the only problem is my I-94 will expire really soon and nobody is aware about what to do.

I think the best way to go is to show up at their office with your I-94 printed off/ passport and you should be good.
