Man shouting 'get out of my country' shoots dead Indian engineer 'because he thought he was Middle Eastern'

At least one bystander told the Kansas City Star that the man shouted "get out of my country" before shooting the Indian men. He is also accused of wounding American Ian Grillot, 24, who was shot when he tried to intervene, the Kansas City Star reported.

Witnesses told the Kansas City Star and The Washington Post that Purinton was thought to have been kicked out the bar Wednesday night before the shooting took place. “He seemed kind of distraught,” Garret Bohnen, a regular at Austin’s who was there that night told The Washington Post in an interview. “He started drinking pretty fast.”

He reportedly came back into the bar and hurled racial slurs at the two Indian men, including comments that suggested he thought they were of Middle Eastern descent. When he started firing shots, Grillot, a regular at the bar whom Bohnen called “everyone’s friend,” intervened.

I realize it's not funny but I have to just say I laughed at the grammar of the post (I realize it was lifted directly from the article).

"Man shoots dead Indian engineer" sounds like he found a dead Indian man and then shot him (the man was already dead).

It technically should be "Man shoots an Indian engineer dead because...". The subject "Indian engineer" is short enough that it should come before "dead". You should only really say "Shoots dead [subject]" when the subject is very long, and even then it is weird.

i thought the same thing! but then it was like oh its the independent and they love saying 'shot dead'. it's like the most popular headline grab in the uk.

It is grammatically okay if the subject is very long and you are going to lose the focus (or if the subject has multiple noun's in it). However for a 2 word subject (Indian Engineer) you should provide the subject before "dead".

At least this headline doesn't describe something the Indian engineer did, because then it ends up sounding like a zombie. "Bystander shoots dead man who was eating a human". Cannibal or zombie? Hard to tell.

Indy does seem to be competing with the Graun, no editors and all interns?

“If you know the enemy and know yourself, you need not fear the result of a hundred battles. If you know yourself but not the enemy, for every victory gained you will also suffer a defeat. If you know neither the enemy nor yourself, you will succumb in every battle.”

You should read "Eats, Shoots, and Leaves" if you haven't already.  I love it, and it is very humorous.

As to the original story, this is very sad.  This criminal should be fully prosecuted.
