" Today, "it's the rare exception" when wealthy business owners don't require prenups from their sons and daughters, says New York attorney Raoul Felder, who estimates that a third of the 300 marital contracts he writes each year involve business heirs. A decade ago, Mr. Felder says, his firm drew up only a couple of dozen prenuptial contracts altogether. (The contracts, which range in cost from about $2,000 to tens of thousands of dollars, aren't filed in courts, so the precise number signed each year can't be tracked.)

Mr. Felder adds that prenups are nearly universal among members of real-estate dynasties, which typically are closely held and pass from one generation to the next. "Most times, there's great resentment on the part of the child," he says.

Increasingly, attorneys are videotaping prenuptial signings in an effort to avert later nullification of the agreements. A contract can be overturned if a divorcing spouse can successfully demonstrate it was signed under pressure, and many spouses have made such claims."

$2000!

whoa, that is way outta the range that I heard from. Divorces are cheaper than that without contest.

Anyone here get one before marriage? If so, how long did it take to get it all written up & finalized, also most importantly how much?

Of course, in a divorce w/o contest situation, a pre-nup is usually a moot point. ;)

IMO a pre-nup is a prelude to divorce.

Just wondering how much the whole thing costs, and is it really necessary to have 2 attorneys (1 for each party) or if its a simple agreement will one suffice?

if you got to ask, then you probably do not need one...............

So true, brother.

Everyone needs one. Everything is good when its good, but when it gets bad, its real bad. So its nice to have some security, both sides!

I went through an uncontested divorce w/o pre-nup or attorney. I didn't need either nor did my ex-spouse. It is possible to remain civil even when something as grand as a marriage fails.

mmm, I don't get it  no, seriously....

to OP: We didn't make a prenup, so obivously I wouldn't agree that everyone needs one....but if it will give you security go right ahead....

I would think the price depends on how fool- proof you want to make it but then again it might be one of those things I don't get again

Naturalized! Yeah!

Everyone says how a pre-nup is a prelude to divorce. IT IS NOT. Unless you are psychic and know what lies in the future, you cant say anything for sure. Just because a pre-nup can be simple, does not mean its not needed, there are assets that can be protected.

Another thing... some say you can go the civil route & be nice... that's what you can say in the "before" stages. But once it gets bad, you cant turn time & say "i wish i did...."

I just wanted an estimate on the amount$$$, not a preaching of why I don't need it.
