As a reminder, please remember that unless the source is an "official" written released verifiable communication then it's just speculation. I'm sorry to hear about your situation Harold... this could very well become true at some point. However, I suspect a ton of lawyers are sharpening their teeth and pencils to file cases to try and reverse some of these executive orders or get things back on track.

Thank you good sir. I may be stressed over nothing but I feel as if now is a great time to start backup plans.

Sooo, I think I messed up...I still haven't updated my name on SSN... I'm reading on their website and it says that in addition to the obvious ID documents and proof of name change,  I must provide proof of "current, Lawful, Work-authorized status".  Since my I-94 is expired, and I=797C is not listed as acceptable proof of immigration status, Does this mean I won't be able to get my SSN updated until I have the EAD??

I need it to apply for driver's license :-/

Anyone else in the same boat?

Yes... they will not issue if i-94 is expired or from 14 days before it expires.

Some states you need SSN for license some you don't. The dmv also verify your presence as does the SSO. Which documents are excepted are again different in different states.

I live in California, and even though I managed to get my SSN with my married name before the I-94 it didn't get me anywhere because for DL they also ask for a valid i-94 for at least 30 days. And they would only produce a license that would expire in the same date as I-94. So I need the EAD anyway.

but if that were true, then even if my I-94 wasn't expired I could still not provide proof of current, Lawful, Work-authorized status" since I don't yet have the work permit?

Please excuse my persistence, but I'm having a lot of trouble in getting the right information from everyone (officials) today...I was turned away from DMV last week as they said they wouldn't accept expired I-94, they wouldn't look at I-797 when in fact (according to the DMV website) they should have accepted these without hesitation.  The guy also told me I would have to wait for GC when in fact, I don't AND (more worryingly) he said I could continue to use my UK license (TOTALLY ILLEGAL)  Furthermore, the customer service center gave me MORE false information as did the District Manger!....Anyway, rant over, VJ has been the only consistent source of reliable information.  I just wish that the visa guides made it clearer that I would have problems once I-94 expired...I just assumed that I-797 from AOS and EAD would supercede the expired I-94 and it wouldn't matter.

Please don't even get me started on the California DMV!  haha!  After getting turned away from the local DMV office, I called Sacramento.  The guy basically said its a waste of time getting the drivers license before you get the EAD or Permanent Resident card.  The good news is that you may legally drive on your foreign drivers license as long as you have not established California residency.

HA! yet another different story.  Thanks for your input, that's interesting.  I just wish I could rely on what I was told being correct!

So I guess the only way to avoid it would have been to apply for both SSN name change and DL well before my I-94 expired?  Seems so ridiculous that you can do all of these thing virtually as soon as you arrive, yet within a few weeks you are suddenly no longer entitled!  GRRRRR!  I feel like crawling into a hole today.

I wish the same were true for GA!  Based on what I have read, their definition of "residence" is if you are in the state of GA for more than 30 days and you are not driving for tourism purposes...after 30 days you are REQUIRED to get a GA DL and cannot use your foreign one.  Which puts me, effectively in limbo.  Still could be worse, at least I'm here
