Vaccines before or after medical

Hi guys,

I have a big doubt that the people at Knightsbridge doctors couldn't help me with.

I am originally from Italy, I obtained my immunization records and I got it translated. I have all the vaccinations needed and I got a booster for the tetanus, diphtheria and pertussis less than 10 years ago (meaning I won't have to get that one done).

My work is giving us free flu jabs, but I'm getting mine done the week after the interview, same applies for the MMR.

Now the question is, if I don't get those done before the interview, but still have them after, can I just bring my proofs to the US so I don't have to pay for them again when I do the AOS? Or do they have to be necessarily before or on the medical day for them to be used when filing for AOS?

Thank you

From what I do understand you have not entered the US as yet? I don't know about before reaching US, because I never applied for the K1 Visa. However, from my knowledge of AOS and the I-693, I had my mother send me my medical report from home. Although they saw the report they still took my blood to run checks, then from their report they will issue the necessary shots. So they do check. If they find that you are immune to a virus they will then cross examine your medical report from your country and put the date you were administered the shot. Otherwise they will just update the shots. They will not complete the I-693 form if you don't take all required shots.

At some point, your vaccination must be transcribed by a USCIS approved doctor. Either the panel doctor in the UK or one in the US. If the doctor at Knightsbridge even approves your medical without all vaccinations, you'll have to see a doctor in the US to fill out the vaccination part of i693 before/when you apply for AOS. That will probably cost you more than you saved on two free stabs in the UK.

If it isn't difficult, it isn't worth it.

It's a major hassle to have to get the vaccination supplement transcribed in the US for aos. Most civil surgeons will want you to redo the entire medical for $$$. It's hard finding one who will just do the vaccination supplement.

I would recommend making sure you have your vaccinations done prior to your medical or just pay to have them done at Knightsbridge. So either: go to your GP and get them done before the medical; pay to get them done at knightsbridge; or reschedule your medical for after when you're planning to get the shots done.

One way or the other, don't leave knightsbridge without having all the shots completed.

Edit: just reread that your work is offering them after your interview. I thought it said after your medical. In that case, go to your GP and get them done (or boots for the influenza). My husband'a gp didn't charge him for the MMR. Or just pay knightsbridge to do them. The hassle in the US will way worse than the hassle to do it now before your interview.

Okay, thank you! I booked the FLU vaccine with my GP to be done before the medical and I checked my immunization records and MMR and tetanus have been done already, so I don't think I'll have to do any vaccines when I go to Knightsbridge.

As per your knowledge, do I have to redo the MMR if I have done it already once in my life?

If you do not have all required shots BEFORE your medical, get them DURING the medical and don't let Knightsbridge fob you off.

Otherwise....

If you do not receive some of the required shots or receive any shots AFTER the medical, then you will have to go to a US civil surgeon and get them all recertified. This can be very expensive and frustratingly hard to find a CS who will do that. It can be done, but it can provide an additional layer of hassle to the process. Bear in mind that for whatever their own silly reasons the USCIS may or may not ask for you to do this anyway.

Hi guys,

Thank you all so much for your help.

I got my tetanus, diphtheria and pertussis done twice already and the last time was less than 10 years ago.

The MMR, I got my mum to double check with my old doctor back in Italy and in my records it shows I got my second shot when I was 12, so that has been amended on my records and won't have to do that.

I have my flu jab booked with my NHS doctor for this weekend, so I will bring that in and I think that's all. I've had chickenpox when I was 9 so I believe I'm covered.

I second what everyone up there ^^^^ is saying - Get them done before, or at the medical in Knightsbridge. I too made the mistake of going to my GP for the outstanding one that could be waived for K1, but was required for AOS, AFTER my medical, and brought an updated vaccination record from my GP with me to the US when I moved thinking that I'd been really clever and saved myself the 35GBP Knightsbridge were charging.

It wasn't until I came on here to check through the contents of my AOS packet that I was about to post, that I realised that that wasn't good enough. D:

I ended up paying $300 for 2 appointments with a Civil Surgeon here in the US to transcribe my vaccination records and insist i had a blood test for syphallis and a skin test for TB...

Save yourself the hassle.

Which are the Vaccines required by AOS but waiver for K1?

None of them are waived for the K1, however having an incomplete vaccination record will not prevent the visa being issued (unlike the CR1/IR1 where the vaccinations have to be complete at medical)

K1 visa holders have to adjust their status once in the USA and married, it is during this process the vaccination records are required - all that said I would strongly recommend getting them all done before the medical, getting it completed in the USA can be both costly and time consuming :)

Everything crossed for a smooth and stress free journey

This is incorrect, for K1 London specific vaccinations for adults.

The guide is a really great place to double check for vaccination requirements.

http://www.visajourney.com/forums/topic/474161-london-k1-a-complete-guide-do-not-post-questions-in-thread/

Go to your NHS doctor and get the immunizations you will need for Adjustment of Status. You can get a K1 visa without having any shots, but you will need them before AOS. It’s extremely wise to take care of it before getting to the US so you can avoid civil surgeon hassles and $$$. Many NHS doctors will do them for free, but they are not obligated to do so for immigration purposes. Get the shots documented by your doctor to take to your visa medical exam. If your doctor should say you don’t need something on this list, remember you have to go by US rules and that differs from UK standards. Here are the shots needed for 19 through 59 years of age:

  • Td or Tdap - Tetanus/diptheria/pertussis or get DT, DTP or DtaP and it will be accepted for AOS also. The latest shot must be no longer than 10 years ago or you need a booster. If you have a record of receiving pertussis, then the Td is okay for the booster.
  • MMR - (if born in 1957 or later)-Mumps/measles/rubella. It's two doses in your life, but if you get the first dose, and 4 weeks haven't passed by your medical, they will waive the second dose for "insufficient time interval". If you only had one dose as a child, get a second one before the medical.
  • Varicella - Not routinely given in the UK . A history of having chickenpox excuses you from the shot. They take your word for it at the visa medical exam.
  • Influenza – Required during flu season only, October 1 through March 31. This was a new recommendation dated November 2010 for all ages over 6 months. Older lists will say flu shots for over age 50. It changed. The list on the London embassy website is out of date since 2009. Don’t follow it.
