As mentioned, you cannot get the papers back. If your case is still under review at NVC, you can send a new set with a cover letter explaining why and mentioning your case number, and hopefully they will meet up with your other paperwork. Be sure to bring a copy of the new I-864 and related documents to interview in case they do not process it at NVC.

What's made him change his mind? I can understand people not wanting to be a joint sponsor (I don't think I'd do it unless for someone related to me by blood or marriage) because it's a huge commitment for many years. But the paperwork us quite clear about the seriousness of it all. Has he heard horror stories of sponsors being sued by the government for immigrants using public funds?

Timeline in brief:

Married: September 27, 2014

I-130 filed: February 5, 2016

NOA1: February 8, 2016 Nebraska

NOA2: July 21, 2016

Interview: December 6, 2016 London

POE: December 19, 2016 Las Vegas

N-400 filed: September 30, 2019

Interview: March 22, 2021 Seattle

Oath: March 22, 2021 COVID-style same-day oath

Now a US citizen!
