I live in Belgium, i moved here from the uk 2 years ago so I have a police certificate from Belgium also.

For the interview must i have the police certificate from Belgium translated and legalised or is it okay to be in dutch?

I live in Japan and the police certificate that I received was already translated in English along with the Japanese version by the police department. Try asking the Dutch police first if they automatically translate as well.

Are you interviewing at the consulate in Belgium? I was under the impression that official documents had to be either in English OR the local language?

I got my interview date today and on the instructions it says that I can have them in the local language but they need to be accompanied by a translated and legalised version.

I have sent another mail to the Ministry of Justice requesting them in English, the first set they sent me were in French which wasn't really ideal for me as I live in Mechelen (Vlanders).

EDIT: forgot to answer, yes I am having my interview at the US Embassy in Brussels.

Interesting! Seems a little silly that they "let" you have them in French/Flemish, but then need them in English anyway.

This is really good to know as my fiance is in Antwerp and we'll be dealing with this relatively soon. When you say a legalized version, what does that entail exactly? An apostille? How are you going about getting this? Sorry for all the questions, I just want to make sure we're prepared!

I think I've read that you're allowed to do the translation yourself, though, right?

You'd think someone in the US embassy in Belgium could learn enough Dutch or French to be able to read "No trace" or similar (that is what it has on a clean UK one), even if they have to refer to a list of such phrases written down. Its not like they have to contend with a foreign character set (eg as they would for chinese, arabic etc). I could understand it being an issue if your interview wasn't in Belgium, but since the embassy there must see loads of Belgian police certificates, you'd think they'd be able to work out the salient phrases by now. Of course it would be different if your record wasn't clean, and you had eg case reports on your offences etc.

It was on February 18th. But he said his letter clearly states that official languages are fine, so if yours says it must be accompanied by a translation, then I guess do that. I wonder if it has anything to do with you being from an English-speaking country? Or maybe they just REALLY recently changed their policy.

Whenever possible, request an English version of any local document. Even though you are allowed to hand in local language documents in most consulates, there is a change you'll need them again further down the road. And having them translated at a later date will be more expensive.

They now have European standards for almost all government documents so you might as well get your money's worth and order them in English. If they tell you they can't do that, ask if they have an international version. You'll be amazed what shows up :)
