Hi everyone.. It seems like it has taken forever but my wife is putting the finishing touches on her N-400 form and was wondering about what to put in her employment history. Since we've been fortunate enough to be able to get by on my income since her arrival, she has never had to work here in the U.S.

The N-400 instructions roughly say: "If unemployed, write 'unemployed'. If self-employed, write 'self-employed'". The thing is, she's really none of the above. She doesn't know what to put and I say she should just write 'Housewife' or 'Homemaker' for the entire time period since her arrival and put N/A in the address fields (or maybe our home address?)

What did you put if you were in a similar situation? I don't know... To me, calling yourself 'Unemployed' when you didn't need to work in the first place doesn't seem right...

N-400

Feb. 12, 2016 - Sent N-400 to USCIS (3-year rule)

Feb. 19, 2016 - NOA1

Mar. 14, 2016 - Biometrics

June 2, 2016 - Interview - Recommended for Approval

Put "Unemployed". The form is not asking whether a person wants (or needs) employment. It's asking if they actually were employed.

You all are probably right in this context, so the USCIS version of Uncle Sam will get 'Unemployed' in the Employment history.

My experience with the term 'Unemployed' is more from USDoL side. Being a homemaker, stay at home Mom, won the lottery and just feel like doing nothing, etc. does not meet the U.S. Department of Labor definition of being 'unemployed' since you must be actively seeking and willing to accept employment to be classified/counted as such. Same government, different rules for different departments...

Thanks everyone for your input. The check is already written, supporting documents are already assembled and the pictures are already taken. She just has to print out and sign the newly finished form and it's into an envelope and off to USCIS!

She's unemployed. She doesn't receive remuneration for a skill.

I have a complicated unemployment question since I did not get any answers I  am posting here. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

I am filling N400 and got stuck on employment history.

How do I report the employment history due to an overlap between a part-time position and receiving unemployment insurance benefits from dept of labor?

I am doing a part-time job since July 2017. Due to the loss of my previous full-time position I received unemployment benefits from dept. of labor from Feb 1, 2017 to November 2017.

Which way do you think is correct for me to fill?

1.       July 1, 2017 to present – Part-time position

Feb 1, 2017 to June 30, 2017 – unemployed

Or should I fill the total time I received unemployment benefits as unemployed like the following

2.       July 1, 2017 to present – Part-time position

Feb 1, 2017 to November 30, 2017

Please let me know your suggestions!

Thank you
