Hi All:

My spouse became US citizen and I have few Questions about filing N 600/Passport for my 15 year old child. Thanks in advance experts.

1.I see most folks apply for passport first and then the N600. Whats the reason behind it? In this case do we need to attach copy of kids US passport with n 600 application?

2.Most of the time DoS keeps original green card for kids to issue US passport. Then during N 600,Would USCIS issue certificate without taking back original green card? Has anyone received Naturalization certificate for kids without giving back green card?

3.Also, whats the advantage of filing for mothers and childs passport together with mothers naturalization cert? Can mother have her US passport and then after she receives hers, apply for kids passport later?

You don't need to do the N600 at all actually. Save the money and just get the passport!

04-29-2008 = Fiancee's 4-min. consular interview, 8:30 a.m.; much evidence brought but not allowed to be presented (consul: "More proof! Second interview! Bring your fiance!").

05-05-2008 = Infuriating $12 call to non-English-speaking consulate appointment-setter.

05-06-2008 = Better $12 call to English-speaker; "joint" interview date 6/30/08 (my selection).

People who apply for a passport for their kids right away almost never get an N600.

In most cases, the N600 is optional. If your child lives with you and is a permanent resident under age 18, then he almost certainly became a citizen the moment you took the oath. You can use your naturalization certificate, his birth certificate, and his greencard to apply for his U.S. Passport.

He will almost never need a Certificate of Citizenship (the result of an N600 application) unless he needs to prove the date he became a U.S. Citizen.

If he doesn't get an N600 then he will need your naturalization certificate if he ever needs to prove the date he became a U.S. Citizen (there are very few times when he might need to do this). With an N600 he'll have his own certificate of citizenship (but it's not cheap).

Thanks for your comments. If one doesn't take certificate how does USCIS updates their system ? for example years down the line could they still consider kid to be on GC in their system and that could trigger unnecessary problem? Also for jobs( e verify system is also USCIS based system? ). Thanks

Richiboy: after the child gets the passport you go to the social security office and update the status just like you do after a getting citizenship.

Hello guys! My questions will be for people, who got citizenship their kids through Naturalization Parents... Maybe someone can help me or give me some suggestions. I am getting my citizenship through Naturalization in few months. I have a son, who is 4 years old and my husband is the step father (US citizen).

Can I apply for US passport (after I will get my Naturalization Certificate) for a minor child before submitting the N-600 and getting the certificate? IF I can apply for his US passport based on my Naturalization Certificate, should he be present in US when I apply for his passport (right now we are staying overseas because of my husband's work) or I can do it without him? And can I apply for his first passport overseas, at the nearest US embassy to us?

I would prefer to get him US passport first, because his old passport expires next year. And then next step will be to apply N-600. Will the Passport agency let me apply for my son's passport IF he doesnt have his own Certificate of Citizenship and if he is not with me? What kind of evidence I need to present for applying for his US passport. I hope someone will give me any suggestions. Have a good day! :)

I know this is an old thread but just for someone who might need this info in the future. Children who are born abroad DO NOT derive the US citizenship while their US citizen parents reside abroad. If you work for the US gov and the child is ON YOUR orders not on his step-parent's orders, the child can derive the citizenship, otherwise NOT. But at some point of time when you return back to the states permanently, the child will automatically derive the citizenship from you, provided he is a US resident and he is under 18. There are also a few more requirements to it that can be found on the official website in the manual.
