Hi everyone I recently joined visa journey as my bf and I are considering getting married so we can be together permanently. My main concern is that we've only known each other a few months and by the time he plans to file for the visa our relationship will only be about 5 or 6 months old and i think this may put up a red flag to show our relationship is really bonafide. He's recently been to jamaica and spent 10 days with me and my family. His job only gives him the opportunity to take one paid vacation a year and as much as id like to wait a bit longer for marriage i dont want to only be able to see him once a year its hard enough being away from him already. He wants to file after his next trip in march. Is there anyone on here that has been successful with this visa after only knowing their partner for a few months I really need some advise this process seems so confusing

How long have you known each other?

Depending on when he files the petition, it will probably be about 5-6 months before your interview- so your relationship would be more than just a short few months by then. People have been approved on only one short visit before although it is best if you have more face-time than that. Just make sure that your fiance front-loads your petition and provides a lot of evidence of your relationship.

There is no set requirement of how long someone has to be together to file.

Our Journey:

01/2017- Embassy requested interview.
04/2017- Fourth visit to Nigeria.  K1 officially denied.
04/25/2017- NOA1 for 2nd K1.

Thanks for responding we've literally only known each other for over 2 months now we met online and he visited me in december an recently went back home and is planning to visit again in march for another 10 days to propose he's using the last set of vacation time he's allowed for the year to come back. He's old school he doesn't believe that length of time together before marriage will change anything when you know you just know but we talk every day we video call we have tons of pics together and with family we go on dates so we have several receipts but i'm concerned if this is enough

The only requirement for the I-129F to be approved is having met once withing 2 years. That being said, it's not a guarantee once you get to the actual interview and some countries are harder than others. I believe Jamaica is a little tougher and not spending much time together could be a red flag but maybe someone else knows better than me. Make sure you have plenty of evidence sent in with your I-129F. A lot of people make the mistake thinking they can just send in the bare minimum for the I-129F and bring more to the interview. A lot of times the people at the embassy will focus mostly on what you sent with your original application and then just glance at the evidence that you bring. It's kind of like you send in all your evidence that you are a genuine couple with the I-129F and prove that you're still together once you're at the embassy.

Thanks for your responses its been helpful i decided to ask him to wait until our relationship is at least 6 months old he's not happy with the wait because after filing it will be another long wait but its best to be safe than sorry so we're going to start after or in may. Thanks again.

I don't understand what your boyfriend is upset about, waiting until you know each other for six months before you get engaged and begin the process to move to a new country with him is completely reasonable?

Like others mentioned before, you do meet the technical requirements for filing for the I-129-f, but the fact that you haven't known each other very long could possibly lead to issues later down the line - both immigration and relationship-wise.

I'm not on expert on either love or immigration, but as someone who is going through both I will always suggest waiting. It's a long and at times stressful process and a huge change for you to be leaving the life you know to come to a completely new country and culture. I'm not saying I don't believe you can know you have found "the one" in a short time, but no matter how much in love you are, for what this process entails you are going to want to know each other pretty well.

No matter what you choose, I wish you the most sincere happiness and success!

You both should take this time to really figure out if you to are going to work. Right now everything is all lovey dovey and perfect. But trust me, it's a whole different thing to move in with each other. Do you have the same ideas when it comes to managing money? Do you have things in common? How would the two of you spend the weekends? Is one of you messy and the other a neat freak? So much to consider and think about before you take the big step.

Marriage is a big step and not something you just do "so that we can be together permanently". Sure, that's a part of it. But marriage is so much more than that. Sure some people don't take it so seriously anymore but at least for me it's for life and I think people should really give themselves more time before they get married and I think it's great that you are going to wait. Why is he not happy about it? He should be happy that you have more time to get to know each other before the big step you're going to take together.
