Got EAD, when to remove 'valid to work only with DHS authorisation'?

Hello

Bit confused about whether my EAD authorisation is enough for me to go to my local social security office in Kansas to get the restrictions removed on my SSN, or whether I need to wait until my green card is approved? My card currently says 'valid to work only with DHS authorisation'.

I called the local social security office today but the lady I spoke to didn't sound very sure.

I came to the States from the UK on a K1 visa in August which has now expired. We married within the 90 days and applied for my green card within that time too. So far I've managed to get my SSN, work and travel permit plus driver's licence, just the green card interview to go (I hope). We filed for adjustment of status on 29 September and my case has been scheduled for interview since 9 Nov. Got the biometrics done at the end of October.

Am hoping some kind soul here can steer me in the right direction. I'm good to wait until my green card comes through if that's the right way to go about it, but if I can get the restrictions removed now with my EAD, I'd like to get it sorted.

You can not get the restriction removed with just an EAD.

Why does this matter to you? The EAD authorizes you to work, so what is the problem?

If you do it now, then you really should go again to update Social Security to your newer status of permanent resident once your greencard arrives. If you don't mind trips to the Social Security office, you can go twice. Or maybe just wait on the greencard.

You can only remove that restriction once you have your green card.

The EAD authorizes you to work and that is reflected on the SS card. With work authorization ONLY, which you have with EAD.

Since you do not have a green card yet you can't remove it.

As stated above, you need your green card in order to obtain an unrestricted social security card.

You do not *have* to get the wording removed though until you become a US citizen. You can voluntarily choose to do so with a green card.

We can accept only certain documents as proof of citizenship for new and replacement cards. These include your U.S. passport, a Certificate of Naturalization, or a Certificate of Citizenship. I think they want to be informed when your immigration status changes, such as from K1 visa holder to permanent resident, permanent resident to citizen.

Thanks for all the great advice, especially all the trouble you've gone to Nich-Nick. Think I'll wait to pay social security a visit when my green card comes through!
