Hi everyone, if this is already addressed in an existing thread please link me. Thank you.

My boyfriend and I were planning to start the K1 process this month but I am concerned about the upcoming I-134 in the future. I read an article that mentioned an increased possibility of denial due to using a joint sponsor on an I-134 because this is not as legally binding as the affidavit of support for a spousal visa. Would anyone else be willing to share their experience with this? Is it still likely to get approved with a joint sponsor for the K1 process providing everything else is in order?

Also, this same article mentioned that it may be a better option for couples requiring a joint sponsor to get married in the foreign fiance's country and then apply using a spousal visa. Is this actually a better route or would K1 still be the best way?

Thank you!

Not sure where you read the article, but it does not sound accurate.

Joint Sponsors are needed when the petitioner does not make the poverty guidelines, having one does not increase the possibility of denial, however, not having one when one is needed does.

You are correct, the I-134 isn't as binding for a spousal visa, that is why it is only used for the K-1 visa, the I-864 is used for the actual Adjustment of Status.

Thanks for your reply, I also cannot remember where the article was otherwise I would link it. I should clarify, I know that when the time comes to do the affidavit of support we will need to use a joint sponsor so I'm concerned about whether that is more likely to cause our application to get denied. You're saying it won't, which is good.

If your consulate accepts a co-sponsor, and your co-sponsor can provide all the evidence asked for, there should be no problem whatsoever. We used a co-sponsor for our K1, and there was no problems. The officer simply asked a couple of easy questions of my husband regarding our co-sponsor. Once your fiancé is in the US, and you are married, you're also going to need a joint sponsor if your circumstances haven't changed by then, when it comes time to adjust status -- this too is certainly allowed.
