Hello. I met my (now) fiance online approximately 2 years ago. 7 months ago I sold everything I owned, and came to the Philippines to meet and get to know her. I'm still here, but,due to an emergency surgery that was very expensive, my funds have been depleted and I need to return to the States to make more money.

We've decided to get married and have been researching the k-1 visa process.

It all seems fairly straightforward. However, since I have not been working, and have no current income.. I was wondering how long I need to wait until we can begin the process.

I'm moving from here (Philippines) to Guam, and will be starting a job approximately 2 weeks after arriving.

But I'm sure to be able to prove I can support her, I need to work for a specific amount of time. Does anyone know how long?

Thanks in advance

Why not marry first and then do a spousal petition? Fewer fees and less paperwork after arrival and marriage (no adjustment of status).

If you have a joint sponsor you can file right away. (In PI joint sponsor can be a problem for a K1, not a problem for a spouse visa). If not, then a few months of working with paystubs that support your income claim should be ok.

Thanks for the reply.

We didn't consider marrying here because we were under the impression the process took more time.

I could apply immediately for k-1 if I had cosponsor? Or only for spousal?

Manila is tougher on K1 joint sponsors than most embassies. Do some reading in the PI forum to learn from other members. Look at both visas and choose the one that is best for your life.

And if u have just started its that long then u to take things slow. Cause even if the job can take care of ur visa expenses the embassy still need to see that at least u have been on that job for long. Where by u can provide bank statement and pay slips I think .

ive known her for 2 years, and lived with her in the Philippines for 7 months.

We have an established relationship as was noted in my first post.

What my question was...was I got a great job now, pays well over the minimum requirements. someone told me, that I should start the filing process now because they don't check your income till the end of the process like 6 months down the line.

is there any validity to that?

Yes this is correct.

You don't have to show anything relating to finances or income until your fiance has her interview, which would be about six or so months after you file your I-129F.
