The next time an annoying friend or relative attempts to argue that the Civil War was fought over anything other than slavery, here’s the definitive response delivered by Colonel Ty Seidule, a Professor of History at the United States Military Academy at West Point:

Southerners don't believe it was fought over slavery. They believe it was fought over the rights of their states to legalize slavery. There's a difference.... I just don't know what it is.

I'm sure Syrians and Saudis who support ISIS think they are supporting their own states rights too....... I'm just saying.

Once upon a hundred and fifty years ago, slavery was done away with in the US.

So why all the uproar about it and the Civil War today? It wasn't an issue 20 years ago.

The issue was as stated, the South fought the Civil War to preserve slavery. The apologists and others insist that wasn't the reason in a bid to glorify the South and create an alternate history in which the South was fighting for (insert any other justification here) to do just that.

I'm semi-neutral regarding the flag in the sense that many people don't know what it really represents, only the faux romanticism of the false narrative that the South fought for something noble, but the fact is that it represents the Government that fought to preserve slavery. It's offensive and in some cases a not so subtle indicator the waiver still wishes the South had won and therefore kept slavery alive and well.
