These weren't people going out and committing serious crimes. No one murdered or assaulted or raped or sexually abused anyone. As I said before, I can see Canada being a bit strict on the whole DUI/DWI thing, but as far as minor offenses (like smoking marijuana in the 1970's) go, I think that's being overly stringent.
No crime is serious if you're not the victim...

Personally, I do not draw a distinction between DUI/DWI and attempted murder. I think they should both be capital offenses. I don't blame Canada for not wanting such people.

PEOPLE: READ THE APPLICATION FORM INSTRUCTIONS!!!! They have a lot of good information in them! Most of the questions I see on VJ are clearly addressed by the form instructions. Give them a read!! If you are unable to understand the form instructions, I highly recommend hiring someone who does to help you with the process. Our process, from K-1 to Citizenship and U.S. Passport is completed. Good luck with your process.

As a resident of Alaska, I have traveled into and out of Canada many times, before, after, and practically during the events of 2001. I can tell you that without exception, the U.S. officials are less friendly, and more bothersome, and ask me more questions, despite the fact that I am a native U.S. Citizen who does not have any of the physical or behavioural characteristics that are typically associated with negative classism, racism, or any other kind of ism you'd want to pick.

In short, in my experience, America has no room to talk when it comes to complaining about Canadian entrance requirements.

Cheers!

Actually, I found the OPs comments about pepper spray being the only thing to stop polar bears highly amusing - like, he is going to cross into Canada and immediately be faced with having to fight off a polar bear! It appears that his behaviour isn't the only thing that is ignorant. His observations about Canada are so far off the mark that I can't even get upset by them - I just find it hard to believe that he is serious. Unfortunately, he is doing a very good rendition of 'the ugly American' - a stereotype I have seldom encountered and am sorry to see on this list.

You might want to reconsider going to America because every mailman carries pepper spray (required) - you could run and hide I suppose when you see the mailman coming. What terrified people.

There are no Polar Bears in the U.S. by the way, except in zoos.

Do you have a clue as to why pepper spray is required to be carried by mail delivery personnel?

Here is the "dreaded" stuff the U.S. Postal Service uses:

Wow what brave bears!! Actually venturing into the dangerous territory of those dangerous :o Americans with guns :o and pepper spray :o (industrial "bear" strength of course). I would have thought that they would seek the safety of the idyllic "Great White North" Canadian paradise.

you got to especially watch out for them Toronto polar bears. I hear they are gay :o

Guess they don't have the freedom to join the US Armed Forces then!!

Canadians Visiting the USA while undergoing the visa process, my free advice:

1) Always tell the TRUTH. never lie to the POE officer

2) Be confident in ur replies

3) keep ur response short and to the point, don't tell ur life story!!

4) look the POE officer in the eye when speaking to them. They are looking for people lieing and have been trained to find them!

5) Pack light! No job resumes with you

6) Bring ties to Canada (letter from employer when ur expected back at work, lease, etc etc)

7) Always be polite, being rude isn't going to get ya anywhere, and could make things worse!!

8) Have a plan in case u do get denied (be polite) It wont harm ur visa application if ur denied, that is if ur polite and didn't lie! Refer to #1

Also, beameup's comment about "it's a colony of Britain--only they now call it 'Commonwealth'".

Although all of the Commonwealth of Nations is composed of UK and areas formerly in the British Empire, easily 90-95% of the Commonwealth's population DOES NOT recognise the Queen as THEIR head-of-state.

Just came back from vacation, so I guessed I missed this post when it first appeared. It was an interesting article, and could have been a venue for some polite and respectful discussion. Alas, it degenerated into a most disrespectful insulting ramble. I'm horrified that someone would post such horrible things about their US neighbour, especially considering the diverse eclectic group of people here. This truly saddens me.
