Probably the border guard picked up on your superior and insulting attitude and was hoping you'd decide to just go back home and not contaminate Canada with your bs.

Now that's entirely possible, which is what I eluded to in another thread about this very thing.

Personally I think it is just the opposite: Canadians are resentful, envious and jealous of the freedoms that Americans enjoy. This border guard just wanted to be a "big shot" and try and humiliate and American citizen by throwing his weight around.

BTW: I have a law enforcement background - I know the "full-circle" treatment when I see it. But, I just kept silent and only answered the three questions politely. No guns, no pepper spray, no mace. I might add that had I been "packing" my Glock they never would have known because they only searched the vehicle. As a matter of fact, I could have attached the Glock to the underside of the vehicle and they wouldn't have found it because they only looked through the contents of the vehicle.

A prime example of "making an example" of a visitor in front of all departing passengers "just to get their point across".

yanno, the extra beef ups at the Canada/US border are at the request of the US government to the Canadian government, not the other way around. This is a #######-for-tat kinda thing here. Canadians have been hassled at the US border for more than a decade, even though its *only just* become law that passports are required to enter the country, even as early as the mid-90s *before 9/11* US Customs and immigration has been bothering us Canucks to get passports.

So, the US asks Canada to beef up security, cuz its Canada's fault yanno  Blame Canada! And now that Canada has actually got in line to the same un-fair tactics as the US has been doing for years, and the Yanks are all up in arms and screaming "unfair! I didnt do anything, I'm American and I demand my rights!" Well, your Bill of Rights does not come with you across the border, or into any other country. Canada has its own laws, and Charter of Rights and Freedoms, and when you're on Canadian soil, you have to adhere to Canada's laws, not America's laws, just because you're American. And ignorance is not an excuse. Americans expect anyone entering their country to all of a sudden act American and respect local laws, well it goes both ways honey!

On one trip to the US in 2000, my husband, myself, and a van load of people were heading across the border from Canada to the US, and said we were meeting up with a bunch of friends we'd met on the internet at a Lord of the Rings fansite. They pulled us over and asked us all sorts of questions, including "do you have any weapons, swords, knives, stuff like that?" Hell no! We were going camping! What the hell do we need swords for? We were in secondary inspection for quite a while, all because they wanted to know if we had any swords with us! And that was *before* 9/11. And we were all white, casually but nicely dressed and polite folks. With an American in our van with us.

So don't grumble and say its all Canada's fault. Its been going on in both directions since the border was put in place and someone invented the words "customs and immigration". Get over it. Mexico is next Hoss, ya better get your cheap haircut done now before you get searched again.

divorced - April 2010 moved back to Ontario May 2010 and surrendered green card

PLEASE DO NOT PRIVATE MESSAGE ME OR EMAIL ME. I HAVE NO IDEA ABOUT CURRENT US IMMIGRATION PROCEDURES!!!!!

It's the freedom to have your rights removed slowly before your very eyes via "Homeland Security". I know I for one am really jealous of that.

Actually, I found the OPs comments about pepper spray being the only thing to stop polar bears highly amusing - like, he is going to cross into Canada and immediately be faced with having to fight off a polar bear! It appears that his behaviour isn't the only thing that is ignorant. His observations about Canada are so far off the mark that I can't even get upset by them - I just find it hard to believe that he is serious. Unfortunately, he is doing a very good rendition of 'the ugly American' - a stereotype I have seldom encountered and am sorry to see on this list.

“...Isn't it splendid to think of all the things there are to find out about? It just makes me feel glad to be alive--it's such an interesting world. It wouldn't be half so interesting if we knew all about everything, would it? There'd be no scope for imagination then, would there?”

Well, you know. Those polar bears in Vancouver can be vicious.

(P.S. buy the pepper spray at a specialty shop in Canada. Also, you might want a shotgun if you're worried about polar bears. Also some cold weather equipment.)

try working at a Tourist/Visitor Information Centre, unfortunately I saw at lot of it in my 4 as an employee there.

I'm still trying to figure out what amazing new freedoms magically appeared once I stepped foot into the US. I'd like to let my husband know how repressed he's going to feel if/when we live in Canada.
