Here is one. Virginians do not understand me when I say the number eight. It has got to the point were I have to say " You know, the number between 7 and 9". Makes ordering a number 8 meal at a McDonalds drive through interesting...

Drive through - another chance for anecdotes. But I am not going there. Dark times.

Am a Yorkshire girl married to a Texan working in healthcare. I must get asked 5 times every day if I am Australian. Never realised Yorkshire folk sounded Australian. One of my funny moments with my hubby was when we were hanging a mirror and I asked him about a spirit level. "You want a drink?" Crazy man says they just call it a level. No spirit needed. BTW, talking about drinks, we just had a World Market open in Waco Tx. I practically inhaled my Dandilion and Burdock! Mmmmm!

Engaged August 2010
K1 applied for August 2010
K1 Approved June 2011
Moved to Texas August 1 2011
Married August 13 2011
Applied AOS September 2011
Temp Work Visa arrived November 2011
Green Card with conditions arrived October 2012
Applied to remove conditions July 2014
Interview and approval of removal June 2015
Thank you Lord for your strength and patience!

Being born and bred in South East London, certain phrases and pronunciations of words are often greeted with strange and quizzacal looks.

For instance, I once asked for a bottle of water. With my accent, the "t's" in that very simple request become obsolete, meaning it sounds like I'm asking for a "Bo ill of war-err".

THIS. EVERY TIME.

And ordering ranch dressing. "RARRNCH?!"

I feel like a child or a very elderly person every time I try to buy something. I am 25. American money confuses the hell out of me. Many times I have actually held my shrapnel-filled hands out to a cashier and said, "can you please do this for me", and I NEVER manage to swipe my card right the first time. I never thought chip & pin would be something I'd long for.

I also get told I sound 'fancy' (in a faux English accent) or 'sophisticated' on at least a weekly basis...I'm from Essex

Oh don't worry about your pocket shrapnel. I am now 46 and did exactly the same thing as you did for about the first six months. Luckily my daughter was learning about money at school at the time and she taught me.....

To be honest I have developed an interesting speech problem. Talking to people and co workers, I will start a sentence and about two thirds of the way through it I completely lock up and am unable to complete it because I am always internally auditing what I am saying. Making sure I dont use slang or correcting pronunciation. They end finishing what I am saying. It is very depressing. I really think I have developed a real mental block.

Gotta admit I do try to talk more Queen's English than South East London now, just to avoid any (extra) confusion haha
