I am still so confused about primary sponsor / co–sponsor

I thought that if I do not have enough income and assets, then I need a co-sponsor and that co-sponsor is the one fully responsible and the gov't does not take into consideration any of my income or assets. And then I read the following on this site about affidavits:

"The US fiance is ALWAYS the primary sponsor, but may have a co-sponsor. If there is a co-sponsor, both the

US fiance and the co-sponsor will EACH have to fill out the affidavit I-134 or I-864 and EACH will have to provide

supporting documentation."

So, I am confused. I will not have enough income and assets for me to meet the 125% poverty level. Therefore, I have thought that I need a co-sponsor and whoever would be for me ( if I would be the last enough to find one ), would need to make the 125% poverty level and that NONE of my income and NONE of my assets are included at all. What is true? It's very painful to think we cannot get married because I will be short some money.

if you have a co-sponsor that meets the 125% poverty level you should be good even though your income does not meet the requirement, thats what the co-sponsor is there for. both of you will have to fill out separate AOS and supporting docs.

Think of it this way; as the spouse of the beneficiary you are fiancially responsible for them. So you need to complete an affidavit of support. Should you fail to meet the 125% of the poverty level, you need to find someone that does AND is willing to take on the responsibility for your spouse in the form of the I-864--thst is where the co-sponsor comes in. The spouse is the primary sponsor as you are the one petitionion the beneficairy plus you are married to the beneficiary. The government will go after teh spouse first and then if you still cannot pay them back then they will go after the co-sponsor.

What's the difference between a co sponsor and a joint sponsor? Also does the co/joint sponsor need to be an American citizen, or can they be relatives of the intending immigrant?

The sponsor needs to be a resident in the United States.

I don't think co- and joint sponsor are in any way different.

If you are going to file a K-1 fiancé visa, remember that your embassy will be London, and different rules will apply for the I-134. In this instance (and only this one) ONLY you fill out this form. If you don't make enough to fill out this form, then ONLY the co-sponsour will fill out this form.

However, once you get to the point (if you are married and adjusting status from a K-1 or you are married and adjusting with a CR-1) where you need to file the I-864 both YOU and your joint sponsour will fill out a form for each of you.

If you intend to use a co-sponsour/joint sponsour they will need to be someone within the USA. A relative or a friend. Whomever is willing to sign the form. Remember that the I-864 is a binding contract between the sponsour(s) and the US government, so make sure they understand the instructions that go with the form. No it cannot be the foreign fiancé's relatives.

Example: I am unemployed as I care for my elderly mother at this time. My sister will be our co-sponsour as she makes more than enough to fulfill the financial obligation. She will be the only person filling out the I-134, and when the time comes we will BOTH fill out the I-864 for each of us.
