Here's an old pic of the US/Canada border crossing in Pittsburg NH (US side). I've crossed the border here many times, mostly on a snowmobile and well before passports were needed. I'm not sure exactly what year it was taken but going by the car in the pic I would say late 60's early 70's. My how things have changed.

I crossed into Quebec there one time in the late 1990's at about 9am on a snowmobile with a few buddies. We pulled up to the Canadian customs and an officer came out all smiles and nice as could be with one of the thickest French Canadian accents I'd ever heard. He asked us to take off our helmets and how far in to Quebec we were headed. We told him to the snowmobile checkpoint for breakfast (about 5 miles in where you can either by a day pass to ride in Canada or turn around and come back to the US for no charge) and we'd be coming back after that. He smiled and said "there's a nice bar right next to the diner that opens at 9." We all laughed and he said "have a good day gentlemen". He never checked our id's or asked for anything else. It was real easy back then. I don't imagine too many officers telling someone on a motor vehicle to go to a bar at 9am nowadays?

Oh my. I missed those old days when everything was much simpler.

This is the Judges' Cave, nearby where I grew up in Westville, CT. After the restoration of Charles II, two of the regicides who had signed the death warrant of Charles I hid out here. I think this pic is probably from about 1870-1880.

Closer to my home now, this is Sunset Boulevard in Hollywood, back in 1905:
