one question: I do not recognize what the ^ symbol as in (10-5)^2 means. I have never come across that as a mathematical symbol before. (any school math was many, many, many years ago! - heheh before a lot of the people here on this forum were even born - yikes!)

Yeah that's because it's only used when having to type out an exponent on the computer.

Not always.

True in just about every form of BASIC.

False in several other languages:

  • C/C++/C#, fortran -- symbol for exponent is "**"
  • Pascal, where "^" means a memory-access op

The ^ symbol is used by graphing calculators to denote an exponent. For instance, if I wanted to type in "Five Squared" into my TI-83 Plus, I'd enter "5^2" (without the quotes).

Thank you! Now I know what the question is I can answer it, hehehehe

“...Isn't it splendid to think of all the things there are to find out about? It just makes me feel glad to be alive--it's such an interesting world. It wouldn't be half so interesting if we knew all about everything, would it? There'd be no scope for imagination then, would there?”
