Actually, the SSN officer told me that your K-1 is not valid anymore because we already got married. They said we should have applied before we got married. They didn't even use the I-94 even our marriage certificate. I guess we just have to file for the AOS and once we get our EAD then we will reapply for the SSN.

oh wow really? its weird because most of the sites and/or forums i read said that you can apply for an ss card/number even if you're married (some just needed to use their maiden name instead of the married name because the card should be the same as the i94).

and its not true that your k1 visa isn't valid once you get married. it says so in the passport that the validity of the visa is 90 days after POE, not "until you're married". tsk you got a crappy officer at your ss office. so sorry....

Ya for SSN you better apply before you get married..so litereally the next day of your arrival

hehe you can't apply a day after you arrived though. wait one or two weeks to make sure that your name is already on the SAVE database. :)

and if you're moving to california, apply for the state/dmv id within 30 days of your arrival :)

Maybe it is different :) although i read somewhere that if you apply too soon for it the ss office will send a verification or some form to uscis to confirm if you are indeed eligible for an ss card/number. That process normally pushes back the ss application for several weeks... but i may be wrong :)

Hey guys, just checking in quickly - about the SSN. Issam and I arrived in the states on the 17th of June, married the morning of the 26th and got the SSN that afternoon. He received his card about 10 days later. The only pain in the neck was the hour wait at the SS administration, lol.

I got a question, did you show them or tell them that you guys just got married? Did you show any marriage certificate? Or did you tell them it is still a fiancée? even you guys got married that morning?

The SSN officer is wrong. Yes the K-1 is invalid once you clear immigration at your POE. The I-94, which is created during processing through immigration, allows you 90 days to fulfill your obligation to get married. Then, you are in "limbo basically" till your GC is approved. But, by the activity of submitting your AOS package covers you for immigration till your GC arrives.

The SSN officer is wrong on the next point. You are eligible to receive a SSN before your GC/EAD arrives. Read what you need at my website here.

You do have to wait one or two weeks to make sure that your name is already on the SAVE database as the SS will use that to verify your status.
