per instruction for the I-864 on taxable income, If you filed a 1040 or 1040A tax form you will put total (gross) income shown on the tax form for the answer to the tax income question . If you file a 1040EZ form with your taxes. On the I-864 question you will put your adjustable total ( gross) income on the tax form as the answer

It is "adjusted gross income". On 1040 (http://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-pdf/f1040.pdf) you first calculate your total income (wages, interest, dividends, capital gains, etc) on lines 7-22. Then you make adjustments (education expenses, moving expenses if for a job, alimony paid, etc). Subtract adustments from total income and that is your "adjusted gross income" on line 37. Going further, lines 39-42 calculate your deductions (itemized or standard) and exemptions (based on you, your spouse, and dependents). Subtract your deductions and exemptions from "adjusted gross income" and you get "taxable income".

sorry but you are wrong, line 37 on the 1040 is adjustable gross income. How ever if you read the instructions for the I-864 it states to use total gross income for the 1040 and 1040a which is line 22. Adjustable gross income is use for the I-864 If you filed a 1040ez form

word for word from I-864 instruction "For purpose of this affidavit, the line for gross (total) income on 1040 and 1040a will be consider in determining income. For persons filing IRS Form 1040EZ the line for adjusted gross income will be consider"

sorry but you are wrong, line 37 on the 1040 is adjustable gross income.

Go look at the link, it is "adjusted gross income". The OP asked what is adjustable gross income. I answered. Wasn't debating what goes on the I-864

In the past, I didnt had to file taxes by myself. Instead my sponsor took care of it so I am not very familiar with form 1040 or any variants of it. I was finally able to go through my wife's 1040 form and I understand what both of you have posted above. I finally understand what you guys are talking about. I appreciate the effort.
