I'm not sure exactly, but I believe the CR1 stands for Conditional Residency when you enter on a CR1 you get a 2 year green card and must apply to remove the conditions, with the IR1 you get a 10 year green card. Which one you get depends on how long you've been married when you enter the U.S.

If you enter the US before your second wedding anniversary, you get a CR-1, which gives permanent residency for a shorter period (2 yr I think) but if it is after your second wedding anniversary, you should get a IR-1, which is a 10-yr permanent residency.

Yes, 3 months before your 2 years is up, you need to file for Removal of conditional status. After you file and USCIS processes the case - with an interview with both the husband and wife they will approve a 10 year green card.
