It is a good thing that apple and google compete with each other. The result is us buying great tech that some of us can't possibly afford or don't really need lol. I am glad that you participated in the discussion and hope that you would continue to do so.

in a related question...our lines due for update,2 iphone6+`s,399.00 each. I don't mind a locked phone, have had, and am grandfathered in on a no longer available international plan, my wife`s iphone5 I bought at apple store as she needs an unlocked phone. Anyone know about whether A.T.&T can unlock hers? I have heard they can, she would still be on my plan, just needs ability to change sim cards in Thailand...also,she says she can get it unlocked in Thailand,i worry if this is possible without damage to phone, and finally, ifanyone has any knowledge about these "unlock your iphone" web sites....thx....stevie and songsang

Hey there.

If your wife's iphone 5 is almost at the end of its contract with AT&T then you can get it unlocked. This should be free if below requirements are true

General Eligibility Requirements for Unlocking All AT&T Mobile Devices

AT&T will unlock an AT&T Mobile Device under the following circumstances:

• The person requesting the unlock must be one of the following:
  • a current AT&T customer
  • a former AT&T customer who can provide the phone number or account number for the account
• The AT&T Mobile Device was designed for use on AT&T's network.
• The AT&T Mobile Device has been paid for in full.
• The AT&T Mobile Device has not been reported lost or stolen.

If not and if it is a newer GSM phone then you can do what I did with my 5, 4 months in to the contract because of an international trip where I needed to use the sim card that works in that region. I used Chronic unlocks.

Outfits like that are usually only repackaging and selling one of the free jail breaking apps. When I was checking last week, none of the big outfits had released a jailbreak for IOS 8 yet. I'm sure they're waiting for the first patches to come out, and typically they don't release for a month or two. So I doubt Chronic unlocks has the code to unlock IOS 8 yet. If she's leaving soon for Thailand, you might want to hold off on the new phone until the jailbreaks are out or just buy an unlocked phone.

How about the guy who comes into a thread about the new iPhone, insults people who like to use iPhones, and then can't take a little back and call them rude? Talk about a wilting lily. I thought it was just friendly banter, and a bit of kidding at first. But you showed your true colors of wanting to dish it out but can't take it when it comes back and resorts to insults. And what pray tell makes you think I'm spoiled? Or is it just your latest insult because I called you on your own actions and you don't like to be held accountable? Actually they don't do jailbreaks. They already have unlocks in place as on the website. It will cost about 109 as per the website and I know 2 people who have already gotten it done on iphone 6.

Well that's great then! I wonder how they get around that without jailbreaking them? I have seen many web sites selling unlocking software, that was no more than repackaging of what the jailbreakers create. $109 seems a touch steep, but I might look into this when we travel over seas. Normally I just jailbreak it, then restore it to original afterwards. After having a few issues with jailbreaking making the iPhone unstable and crashing the phone until I could connect to a computer and restore it, I've preferred keeping to original software.
