I have taken one that is 2 inches by 2inches (51 x 51 mm), will this get rejected? Does it just need to be the smaller, usual passport size?

(45 millimetres ( mm ) high by 35mm)

Here is the site I was using for guidance but I found it a little confusing :/ http://travel.state.gov/content/visas/english/general/photos.html

...and yes we are trying to do the visa forms ourselves :)

THANK YOU SO MUCH!!!!

Your passport picture size is correct. It's indeed 2" x 2" : http://travel.state.gov/content/visas/english/general/photos/photo-composition-template.html

The photo spec on your link is only for the range of space the head in the picture should occupy. :)

That is the correct guidance for the many passport style photos you will need before you are done with immigration. The photo tool works well for do-it-yourself. Hint. Take a photo showing most of the torso. The tool will zoom and crop to the right proportions. If you try to take the photo of just the face, it will be too large to shrink to a 2x2 and work properly with the tool. It will create a 4x6 white photo with 2 passport sized pics in the middle that you cut out. You can print at home on glossy photo paper or take the file to a photo place or kiosk and have it printed there.
